“Cowboys aren’t like other men. Cowboys live simply, fuck hard, and love with everything they got. Cowboys also don’t fucking share,” he said firmly.

“You aren’t at fault for this, and your brother is missing out because of his stubbornness.”

“He’s living with his pain in the only way he knows how.”

“By avoiding it,” I told him.

He nodded. “That’s exactly right. Someday, when he’s ready, I’ll be here. I won’t stop trying to get him home, and the door will always be open to him.”

I refrained from telling him that Lance said he would kill Mason if he ever stepped on Hallow Ranch again. I also refrained from telling him that Mason would be getting a swift kick in the nuts from me if he ever came home. Then my mind focused on Denver’s words. He still hadhope.Whether he wanted to admit it or not, he still had hope his brother would come home.

Hope was something I’d lost a long time ago and seeing a man like Denver still hold out for something that might not happen…it warmed my soul. He was strong. So strong and he didn’t realize it.

I nodded, and then he gave me a piece of information that made me weak in the knees.

“His biggest sponsor is Evergreen. That’s just a cover up, a false name.”

A tear fell from my eye as my heart pounded loudly in my chest. My fingers linked together at the back of his neck, anchoring myself to him. “It’s you, isn’t it?” I whispered.

My cowboy nodded. “Gotta make sure he gets his dream, baby.”

Denver Langston was a good man and a wonderful brother.

“You deserve so much more than me,” I rasped. He was wonderful and I…I had nothing to offer him. Nothing but baggage.

He looked pained as he said, “You’re all I want.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” I promised.

Silence stretched between us, and I could hear his beating heart in his massive, hard chest. I was sure he could hear mine, too.

“I—”

“Hey, dad!”

Denver’s forehead met mine as he let out a growl of frustration.

I giggled.

“Not funny,” he hissed, his hands squeezing my waist.

“It’s always going to be funny, Smoke,” I returned softly. The door opened and I heard little footsteps.

“Dad, Beau called Jigs and said—what are you doing to Valerie?” Caleb asked from behind me. I tried to move but Denver kept me in place. He looked over my shoulder.

“Kissing her, son,” he stated.

“Why are you kissing her?” he yelled in shock.Oh, the mind of little boys.

A chuckle came rumbling from Denver’s huge body. “Because I like her, bud.”

“Can I kiss her?” Caleb asked.

“Oh, goodness,” I hummed, burying my face in Denver’s chest, heat rising in my cheeks.

“Only on the cheek, bud, and only if she’s comfortable with it.”

My heart swelled.
