Page 161 of His Last Nerve

“Damn, bro. Another one bites the dust, huh? First my fiancée and now her?” Mason’s deep voice filled my ear, his light laughter making my stomach turn.

I fell to my knees, fighting against his hold. Valerie was on the ground now, on her stomach with her hand stretched out to me, in the dirt.

“Beau! Get Nancy out of here!” Mags yelled.

Nancy?

Fuck, what was I going to tell her? I killed her daughter.

I was a worthless—

“You got two seconds to get a fucking grip before I break your fucking nose—again,” a growl came from in front of me.

My eyes opened and Mags was standing above me, his hat off. His long dark hair hung down on either side of his face, his dark eyes flashing with panic. Beau was across from him, chewing his gum slower than normal, his blue eyes one me.

I was on the ground.

No, I was on the floor of my office.

Nancy.I had been talking with Nancy about Valerie—

I sat up quickly and Mags’ hands landed on my shoulders. “Steady, Kings.”

My head shook and I pressed the balls of my palms into my eyes. “What the fuck is wrong with me?”

“Nothing,” he answered. “Just got some demons still trying to haunt you, that’s all.”

“She’s dead,” I croaked.

“Who?” Beau and Mags barked.

Pain crashed into me like a thousand-pound weight. “Valerie. I killed her.” I brought my knees up and put my arms on them before hanging my head.

“This is all Moonie, brother. We’re going to find her. We’re going to bring her home,” Beau promised.

She would never forgive me.

I wouldn’t blame her.

“I saw Pop,” I admitted, my eyes on the floorboards.

Mags bit out a low curse. “When this is all over, promise me something, Kings.”

I lifted my head. He was in front of me now, on his haunches. His eyes held mine as he spoke. “Promise me you’ll talk to someone about what you saw over there.”

I nodded.

They told me that Nancy called for them when I mentioned Pop. I didn’t try to hurt her; I was lost in my own nightmare.

Once I got back in my chair, I got back to work, scanning the security footage from last night. The cameras from the barn and bunkhouse recorded Valerie running up to me. My eyes never left the screen as I watched myself step up to her. I could see the anger pulsing and radiating off my body. I could see the confusion and hurt on her gorgeous face. I could see the fallout. I could see the moment my heart shattered.

When she ran away, I focused on the other cameras. The sun had been setting when we’d started fighting. She didn’t head to the house. She ran through the field, cutting through it to head to the driveway. I zoomed in on the frame when she stopped. She was just on the other side of the tree in front of the house, her head buried in her hands, her shoulders shaking. It reminded me of the first day we met. She cried in her car on the edge of my property for twenty minutes.

Guilt cut deep, deeper than the pain I was feeling.

Then, I saw movement in the corner of the screen.

“What the fuck?” Beau hissed. Mags and he leaned in closer to the screen.
