Page 24 of His Last Nerve

Hallow Ranch protects him, and he defends it.

After our discussion, I walked him out and asked about Moonie Pipelines. Usually, pipelines had to go through local governments. Chase told me Moonie was a private company, and that usually the states were calling him, not the other way around.

That made sense.

The state had been after Hallow Ranch for the last decade—but we weren’t the only ones taking the heat. There were other ranchers, like Carson Waters, who just wanted out. Ranching was not for the faint of the heart, and neither was farming.

They wouldn’t get my ranch—not on my fucking life.

Shaking the thoughts of pipelines, blood, and green eyes out of my head, I focused on work.

By the time the sun was low in the sky, the fence was as done as we were. We were making our way back to the barn, Beau beside me on his horse. Keeping my gaze ahead, I asked, “What did she say to you?”

“Pretty girl?” he drawled.

I remained silent, not willing to entertain his bullshit today.

“She introduced herself and told me who she worked for,” he said as the ranch came into view. I was lucky to have grown up in a place like this. Though my memories were dark, light surrounded my home. I would die trying to keep that light around it.

“What did you say?”

He scoffed. “I took one of her stupid pamphlets and said I would give her a call when I convinced you to sell this piece of heaven to that greasy pipeline.”

“Heavy on the sarcasm there, aren’t you, son?” Jigs, his father called out over his shoulder. Mags, who was beside him, chuckled.

“Fucking asshats,” I muttered.

“I haven’t seen her yet,” Lawson noted from beside Beau. “She really pretty?”

Beau whistled low. “Yeah, man. She is.”

Thatright thereis why she couldn’t be trusted.

She had only been here a handful of times and already they were drooling over her.

I couldn’t blame them.

She was new pussy.

This town didn’t have a lot to choose from. The twins usually went to Denver one weekend out of the month to get their dicks wet. Sometimes, Beau tagged along, sometimes he didn’t. Jigs didn’t bother chasing pussy anymore; he was chasing peace instead.

Then, there was Mags.

He never left the ranch, not once since the day I took him on. If he needed something, he would order it. The boys always invited him, and he always declined.

I understood him, though. That man was fighting demons, like me.

“Maybe she’ll be back tomorrow,” Lance said as we approached the barn. My eyes drifted to the spot where she had been parking, her tire marks deep in the dirt and gravel.

For my sanity’s sake, I hoped not.

Shewasback.

She was back in her usual spot, and today, the twins got to see her for the first time. My menlookedat her.

Again, how could they resist?

Just one look and she would have you hooked.
