My gut believed him.

Something wasn’t right.

Cathy came to the ranch twice in one day. It reeked of desperation and something else.

“You’re getting that feeling, aren’t you?”

He nodded. “I don’t like it, Kings.”

“I don’t either, Mags.”

Chapter Fourteen

Valerie

ThreedaysafterIleft Hallow Ranch, I got the courage to go back again. I didn’t tell Mr. Moonie about the murder I’d witnessed. I didn’t tell him about my feet getting cut up.

I told him about the storm and how Mr. Langston helped me. I also told him I think I got through to him and I had high hopes for the Hallow Ranch account.

Then I got fired.

Fired.

By Mr. Moonie himself.

Over the phone.

“Valerie, while I appreciate your efforts to obtain the Hallow Ranch account, I have decided to go in a different direction,” he said through the phone.

My gut twisted. “Sir, please, allow me more time.”

“Moonie Pipelines doesn’t have the time. Denver Langston is a hard one to crack, and rest assured that he will, just not by you. By me.”

My throat was thick, and tears stung my eyes. “What does that mean for me, sir?”

A soft chuckle and then, “Ms. Cross, you have been an asset to this company for years. However, you failed to do your job. Normally, you would have the contract signed by the owners and be home by now.”

“Yes sir, but—”

“You don’t have the contract. Mr. Langston isn’t budging,” he stated, his voice void of any human emotion. He sounded like a robot.

“What does that mean for me, sir?” I asked, repeating myself as the panic set in, my mom’s face flashing before my eyes.

“Your severance package will be sent out within the week.”

Then he hung up.

That bastard hung up on me.

Forty-five minutes later, in the middle of my breakdown, his assistant emailed me the details of my termination. I had to sign the exit paperwork. They weren’t even paying for my flight home, and I was expected to check out of the hotel tomorrow morning.

I didn’t call my mom.

I didn’t book a flight.

I didn’t pack my bags.

In fact, I did the one thing I probably shouldn’t have done. I put on some dark blue jeans, high heeled booties that I got on sale two years ago, curled my hair, put on make-up and left.
