“Get the fuck out of my house.” His voice was cold and hard. His smoke was all around me now.

Where was this coming from?

“You’re insane,” I whispered, staring at him as tears threatened to form. I didn’t understand this hot and cold. It was too much.

“He came here and told me he was looking forward to getting to know me better. Said he sent you on another job.” He came around the island. “This your other job, baby? Getting under my skin?” His voice was mean, downright cruel and his gray eyes were cold, guarded.

He didn’t trust me. I haven’t given him a reason, either.

Not only was I a threat to his home, but now to his freedom. I was awitness.

He had no right to trust me. Perhaps this breakfast was just a set up to make me comfortable. He said Mr. Moonie was here early this morning. So maybe this was Denver’s plan all along. He didn’t care whether I stayed or left. He just wanted to protect his home and he thought that I was still a threat to it.

I ignored the sting of it all when I looked up at him and said, “I’ll leave.”

“Now,” he clipped.

Chapter Seventeen

Valerie

Withtearsinmyeyes, I turned and ran up the stairs to gather my stuff quickly. After I finished, I went downstairs. No Denver.

I was done with this state.

I was done with that stupid fucking job.

I was done with Hallow Ranch.

I was done with Denver fucking Langston.

Without taking another look at this beautiful home, I pushed through the front door and down the porch steps. I ignored the visions of that night, my feet bleeding as my body shook with fear, and headed down the gravel path. Pushing away the thoughts of Denver taking care of me after I witnessed him kill a man—twice—I looked up from my sandals.

I didn’t have my rental.

It was back in town at the hotel.

Bags on each shoulder, I walked.

I walked and walked for what seemed like miles and when I hit the main road, I turned and headed towards town. Cars and trucks passed me but none of them stopped.

I didn’t want them to.

I was done with everyone in this fucking state.

I would get my rental, drive to Denver, book my flight andleave.

Colorado and the Hallow Ranch would be a distant memory for me in a few months.

A red truck sped past me and screeched to a halt in front of me.

Smoke.

My footsteps slowed as I watched him get out of the truck. He was charging towards me, anger radiating off him in powerful waves.

“The fuck do you think you are doing?” he barked.

“You told me to leave!” I shouted back.
