“Denver!”

He grunted against me and bit my flesh. I tossed my head back, my hips moving faster against him.

“Dad! Valerie!”

Both of us froze, and Denver’s head flew up. I looked to the door, but it was still closed. Panic set in, and when Denver stole a glance at me, I could’ve sworn he was ready to smile. I scrambled off the big man and adjusted my dress. I looked over at him and to find his hand on his jeans, shamelessly adjusting as he stared at me. When he was done, his thumb stroked my cheek.

“Thanks for the kiss, baby.” Then he winked—winked.

“Boy!” he bellowed, heading to the door. I stood in the living room, shocked, aroused, and scared as I watched Caleb burst through the front door and hug his father.

Shocked because I didn’t think a man like Denver had a playful side.

Aroused because…duh.

Scared because when he walked away from me, he took my heart with him. She wasn’t soaring in the skies of love anymore. She was in his hands.

Chapter Twenty-Two

Denver

“Doyouneedhelpwith anything?”

I looked over my shoulder to find Valerie standing by the fridge, looking a bit lost. Her bun was tilted, her cheeks were flushed from our session on the couch.

This woman will undo me. I could feel it.

“No, baby. Don’t you need to call your mom?” I asked, holding her gaze. I watched as the green of her eyes flared slightly at the mention of her mother. It wasn’t with anger, though. It was something else.

“Why…” she trailed off, struggling to find the right thing to say.

“Val, you always call your mom around this time. I also know you call her in the morning, too. If you need to call, and check in, go ahead,” I said, gesturing to the ingredients on the counter. “I got dinner.”

“I’m not used to being taken care of like this,” she blurted.

Of course, she wasn’t. She’d been taking care of everyone around her for years, working in a shitty job, coming home to a sick mom for years. She put her dreams on the backburner. I nodded. “I know you aren’t, Val. I’m going to change that.”

She took a step forward. “I would like to help with dinner, please.”

A chuckle left me. “That’s cute, but no.”

She stared, mainly at my mouth.

“Enchantress, cut that shit out,” I warned. She blinked and met my eyes, confusion dancing in hers. “Stop looking at my mouth like that.”

“I don’t think I’ve seen you smile before,” she murmured. “You just chuckled, and I saw a bit of it, but it was gone before I could enjoy it.”

Fuck.

Me.

I opened my mouth to say something but was cut off my Caleb coming in from the front porch. “Dad!” he exclaimed, waving a book in his hand. The second Harry Potter book, I think.

“What is it?”

He ran in and stopped by Val. “I finished it!”

“Already?” she asked, her brows going up.
