“She made lists?” I surmised, glancing at the fine, feminine scrawl on the legal paper contrasting off the white surface.

I recognized some of the names on the “accept” list and smirked to myself.

It wasn’t a bad effort for her first time on the calls. She’d done better than I expected.

“She’s too green for this, Atlas.”

“Everyone starts somewhere.”

“She’s going to get caught.”

I whirled around, shaving cream flying onto the floor with my gesture.

“So, you don’t want her to come back tonight.”

Sage’s jaw twitched. “It doesn’t matter what I want, does it?” she replied shortly. “It’s not my business.”

“Did she do well?”

Sage hesitated, and I had the answer to my question. My smirk broadened, and I returned to my shaving, retrieving the razor as Sage released a massive sigh.

“You would be a fool not to heed my concerns.”

I hissed lightly, and she recoiled, knowing that she had crossed a line. Hands up, she backed out of the bathroom without another word, leaving me alone with my morning task of readying myself.

Was I taking extra care this day? I seemed to extend the blades over my cheeks with more caution and care than usual, ensuring that every stray hair was accounted for.

Why? Was I going to see Bianca tonight?

It was wiser not to cross paths with her, even though I hadn’t stopped thinking about her, even in the throes of all my other business. Knowing that she was in my house, so close, so accessible, had been the ultimate test of my resolve.

But I had withstood my desires.

Last night.

She would be back again that night.

And I would need to see her. She needed to get paid, didn’t she?

“Sage?”

I listened, but the fae didn’t return. I had scared her off with my glowering, but she couldn’t have gotten far.

I finished up, patting down my face with aftershave, relishing in the sting as the fresh scent of pine filled my nostrils. Steam from the shower had cleared away to show my eyes clearly, and I was ready to seize the day ahead.

I found Sage in the kitchen with Luve, speaking in low voices. My brow furrowed as they straightened in my presence.

“I hope you weren’t talking about me,” I purred, moving toward the island to slide onto a stool.

“Not everything is about you,” Sage muttered without meeting my eyes.

They were talking about me.

“Did you pay the girl before she left?”

Sage scoffed. “Me?”

“I’ll take that as she didn’t get paid?”
