Page 32 of Reckless Wolf

I’d been around long enough to understand the outcome of these tales. I’d heard them too many times before.

“She got too comfortable where we were, living in the trailer park for too long. My father tracked us down and tried to claim us as his property. Mom wouldn’t let us go without a fi—”

Her voice broke again, and this time, she wasn’t able to stop the tears from spilling. My hands again found their way to her thighs, fingers tightening against the material of her pants.

“What happened?”

“He…” She swallowed and composed herself. “He killed her. Shot her.”

Fury spiked through me, a dozen of my own memories resurfacing in a torrent that I would rather not have felt.

“One of the bullets ricocheted off the metal wall and hit Dahlia, catching her in the side. She almost bled out. She would have, if not for Jesse’s fae healers.”

Gritting my teeth, I cocked my head back.

“That didn’t stop your father from selling you, though, did it?”

Bianca shook her head and laughed mirthlessly.

“No.”

I made a mental note to deal with her father. The rage I felt toward him was insurmountable in that moment, but it was pale in comparison to the emotions overcoming me for this vulnerable, terrified wolf before me.

“Bianca, it’s going to be okay,” I offered her weakly.

“You keep saying that!” she cried, the tears continuing to flow down her cheeks. “But it’s not! Did you hear what I just said? He’s moving the wedding up! It’s happening in two weeks! Dahlia is still not strong enough to run, and we don’t have the funds to get very far.”

I reached up to cup her face in my hands and pulled her toward me; the consequences be damned. I couldn’t think of another way to ease her suffering, to make her see that I would do anything to protect her, even if that meant putting everything of mine at risk. The conflict inside me was diminishing, the need to be with Bianca overtaking everything else.

“You have to trust me,” I told her huskily, drawing her face to mine. “You’ll be all right.”

Her eyes enlarged, the reality of my lips so close to hers daunting, and she set her gaze upon my mouth.

Stop! Don’t! Atlas, the curse!

I couldn’t be sure whose voice warned me to stop, to remember what it was I needed to save, what was at stake, but none of that mattered when Doe Eyes peered at me with such naked emotion.

“Help me,” she whispered, and I was done.

My mouth moved forward, my brain shutting down as our lips joined. She tasted just as sweet as I’d known she would, the supple skin melding against mine. A small gasp of surprise filled my tongue, and I pulled her closer, touching the tip of mine to hers.

Bianca moaned, her eyes closing, long, dark lashes falling to capture every sensuous second of the heat between us. I was so caught up in the kiss, I almost didn’t notice the rage of my erection until our tongues twined together.

My teeth gnashed down gently on her lower lip, and she cried out softly, pulling back, her eyes huge.

“What are you doing?” she whimpered.

As if I’d been burned, I fell back, but she pounced, throwing herself out of the chair to straddle me, shaking her head like she regretted her question. The firmness in my pants stole her breath, the confusion and awe on her face tangible.

“Do it again,” she begged. “I’m sorry!”

“I can’t,” I muttered, half-heartedly pushing her off.

It wasn’t a good effort, but it was enough to move her.

“No, don’t do that!” she pleaded. “I know you can help me. I took all those calls last night. I know you help lots of beings, beings worse off than me. Why won’t you help me?! I didn’t do anything to put myself in this position!”

“I know that—”
