“A job. Really? Doing what exactly?”

I didn’t want to get into the semantics of my role at Atlas’ house or what had occurred between us, but it was hard to hide things from my sister’s astute stare, especially when she watched me under such close scrutiny.

“Answering phones,” I replied evasively. “Dealing with Shifter Affairs.”

“That’s it?” She was rightfully dubious, but I wasn’t about to give her more than that. “Why didn’t you go back? Was the money no good?”

I looked away, thinking of the generous cash payment still sitting hidden under our shared mattress.

“I’m really attracted to him.” I blurted it out so fast, I didn’t even have time to realize I’d thought it.

“He’s pretty hot,” Dahlia tittered. “Not to mention the most powerful shifter in Covale.”

“He owns Covale City,” I remarked dryly.

My sister eyed me speculatively. “Is that all he owns, Bee?”

Defensiveness crept up my neck. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means your face is the color of raspberries right now. What else happened between you that made you stop going there?”

I shook my head. “It’s too dangerous,” I lied. “If Jesse caught me…”

“It didn’t stop you at first.”

“No, but then I thought about what would happen to you if I were caught,” I insisted. Dahlia balked at the idea, and I exhaled.

“Go to sleep,” I told her. “There’s only a week left until the wedding. You’re getting stronger every day. If you keep getting rest, we might have a fighting chance to get out of here before the wedding day comes, okay?”

“I’m doing my best,” Dahlia reassured me, and I believed her.

We were both doing all we could to escape Jesse’s reign of terror. But it wasn’t fast enough.

My sister’s exhaustion eventually overtook her, but I lay awake long after she’d succumbed to her slumber, thinking of Atlas.

Did he think of me, too?

Get over yourself, Bianca.I told myself.Atlas has more important things to worry about than you. He made that pretty clear already. Follow your own advice and get some sleep. You’re going to need all the energy you can muster over the next few days. The end is coming.

Chapter19

Atlas

Each day seemed longer than the last, the hours painful since the moment Bianca had walked out of my life.

At first, I expected her to return, to admit that she’d made a mistake by leaving and ask for her job back, but when she didn’t come on the second day, I sent Petyr to look for her.

“You want me to go to Jesse’s compound?” the guard asked, not bothering to hide his dubiousness. “And do what?”

“See if she’s there.”

“And if she is?”

I hadn’t thought that far ahead.

“Just see if she’s hurt, or…” I paused. “If she’s okay.”

Petyr visibly swallowed, irking me.
