I blinked and realized she’d asked me something.

“What?”

“What is racing through that head of yours?” she demanded suspiciously. “What are you planning?”

I forced a smile.

“Nothing,” I lied. “I’m just thinking about how lucky we are that we got away from Jesse.”

Dahlia dropped her silver spoon back into the bowl and pushed it away, droplets of milk spilling over the side.

“I want to go for a run tonight,” she told me.

I raised my brow in surprise.

“Really? You’re feeling up to it?”

She nodded eagerly. “Yes. For the first time since the accident—”

“It wasn’t an accident!” I thundered with far more anger than I intended. “Eugene may not have meant to shoot you, but he did shoot the gun.”

“You know what I mean, Bee. Why are you so on edge?”

I swallowed nervously, shifting my eyes away.

“A run sounds like a great idea,” I agreed. “It’s been a long time since we’ve done that together.”

“Just you and me, though, right?” Dahlia asked, glancing toward the doorway. “I mean, I love Atlas for all he’s done for us, but I’m starting to feel like the third wheel here.”

I grinned genuinely now and grabbed her hand playfully.

“Just you and me, little sis,” I replied lightly. “No need to get jealous of my man.”

Dahlia rolled her eyes.

“Now you’re just being weird,” she said, standing.

I instantly jumped up to help her, but she waved me away.

“I’m fine. Honestly,” she said, her steps even and sure.

She did look fine, healthy. My plan began to take shape in my mind, but I was still on the fence.

Wishful thinking, a deep desire to be with Atlas, the safety of his mansion—all these ideas kept me in place, but if things continued as they were, how much longer could I expect to keep going this way?

Chapter28

Bianca

Sage flew through the kitchen as Dahlia disappeared upstairs, her face stained white.

“Sage!” I called out, but she didn’t slow down. “SAGE!”

She paused, and I could tell she considered leaving without acknowledging me, but something stopped her. Probably the notion of upsetting Atlas by ignoring me.

“What is it, Bianca?” she snapped, clearly not in the mood for conversation.

“What is going on?”
