Joey’s face twisted into a deeper scowl.

“So it’s true then? You really were shacking up with Atlas after you were promised to Jesse?”

I scoffed contemptuously. “You mean sold to Jesse?”

“You know what I mean, Bianca.”

“No, I don’t, Joey. Explain what you mean.”

“Just sit back. We’ll be there soon.”

I scoffed again and flopped back into my seat, folding my arms over my chest. I couldn’t believe that I was being judged when I was the one who had been kidnapped and sold.

“I hope you never have a daughter, Joey.”

“Shut up, little bitch,” Eugene snarled. “You have no idea the sacrifices I made for you and your bitch sister.”

I sprang forward again, fist raised, and took pleasure in my father’s recoil, even if he did reach for the gun for protection.

“Sacrifices?” I spat back. “Like drinking yourself into oblivion every night and spending all our money on gambling and prostitutes?”

Eugene’s eyes bulged. “Your mother filled your head with lies!”

“We were there, Eugene,” I reminded him dryly. “Until we were fourteen and got our periods. Remember when you started looking at us with cash signs in your eyes? Get over yourself.”

“Lies! All lies!”

“We’re here,” Joey interjected, cutting us both off.

Indeed, we were.

The compound was in front of us, and a wave of bile filled my throat. The place I thought I would only see in my nightmares was right in front of me again.

Why had I left Atlas? How could I have been so stupid?

My head swiveled to the right, and before I could consider my move, I threw open the door and bolted out of the car, into the night.

One shot rang out. The second almost hit my foot.

“The third one will hit you, Bianca!” my father shouted hysterically. “I swear to all the gods!”

I heard the gun cock and stopped. He had killed my mother and almost killed my sister. I had no reason to believe he would think twice about killing me. He certainly hated me enough.

Someone took my arm, and I looked up to see Joey staring at me.

“Stop making this harder than it needs to be,” he said grimly. “Stop running.”

Grinding my teeth, I considered punching him in the nose, too. Not because I thought I could escape, but just so that he would match Eugene. I would punch everyone in the compound square in the face every single time I saw them. Make them think twice about putting their hands on me.

Or I could just resign to the fact that this was my life now, and no matter where I went or how much I ran, I would always end up back here. Because Jesse owned me. And I just needed to accept that now.

Chapter33

Bianca

“Come on, Bianca,” Joey muttered, pulling my arm.

I yanked back, and he eyed me warily, fully expecting me to run, but this time, I didn’t bother. We were at the back entrance, the way we had tried to escape when we’d snuck out on the very last night we’d been at the compound. I counted six guards, all armed and pointing their weapons at me.
