But the aftermath of Jesse’s death had done what we had hoped. The curse had fallen away, and the damage to the casinos was at a standstill. I wasn’t entirely ruined, but rebuilding was going to take time, even if the authorities had been dealt with, and I was no longer being investigated for criminal activity.

“I don’t need to tell you ladies that Jesse ran some shady businesses. That is not the way I do things. I don’t deal in drugs or weapons. If your loved ones are tied up in his messes, I will give them leniency—if they come to me first.”

There was a stillness before a raucous burst of laughter erupted from the group.

“Loved ones?” Jessica choked, sniggering wildly as she shot a look at her sister-wives. “You mean the assholes who sold us to Jesse in the first place?”

“String ‘em all up!” Clarice called out.

“Hear, hear!” the women chanted.

Bianca sighed and nodded.

“Told you,” she muttered at me.

It broke my heart to know that there were so many sick families out there, ones who would sell off their sisters, daughters, nieces to the depraved likes of Jesse.

But I swore that day that it would not happen on my watch, never again.

There was no curse to blame for turning a blind eye to this kind of thing. I would go in swiftly and without mercy if I heard of any other forced harems in Forny or Covale City.

Then, perhaps, we would expand.

First things first, though.

“You are all free to live your own lives,” I told them again. “I will set you up with a stipend and a home…”

I paused and glanced at my mate, who did not know what I was about to say next.

“However, if any of you are interested in working for me, I am sure I will have use for your skill set.”

Everyone gasped in horror, and I balked, recognizing how my words sounded.

“I meant as vigilant, smart female shifters,” I added quickly. “I am thinking of forming a coalition to prevent anything like this from happening again. It would be good to have some women with an inside understanding to get that going.”

Bianca’s head jerked toward me, and she gaped at me in appreciation, stars shining from her eyes as she smiled at me.

“Really?” she whispered.

I nodded. “Yes, really.”

“I could take down some bastards like Jesse!” one woman yelled from the back.

“Me too!”

I grinned at the group.

“Good. We’ll make the arrangements. In the meantime, you have Bianca’s contact information if you need anything.”

I adjourned the meeting, and the women shuffled out of our living room, each one of them marveling at the interior on their way out.

“Just seeing them makes me want to dig Jesse up and murder him all over again,” I growled when the last of his harem had left. Bianca slipped her arms around my waist and rose onto her tiptoes to kiss me on the lips.

“It’s great what you’re doing. That’s exactly what Forny needs. A facelift.”

“Forny needs to be razed to the ground and restarted,” I muttered, shaking my head. “But we’ll get there.”

“I hope Gabriel is spinning in his grave, knowing that you ultimately got everything he tried to keep from you,” Bianca chuckled.
