“Why are you so miserable this morning?” I asked, grabbing a fork. “Don’t tell me you’re mad because we’re late.”

“You’re always late,” Dahlia retorted, throwing her napkin down on the table. “And I’m always alone.”

My good mood faded. Brow furrowed, I looked at her and shook my head.

“That’s not true, Dahl. You literally live in the house with us.”

Dahlia sighed deeply and sat forward, leaning her elbows on the table. For the first time, I noticed a distinct sadness in her eyes, eyes that were mine.

She’s unhappy! Why haven’t I noticed this before?

I reached out to take her hand, but she didn’t allow it, causing me to draw back.

“Dahlia, what is going on?” I demanded, suddenly very concerned. “Has something happened?”

She exhaled again and shook her head.

“No. That’s exactly the problem, Bee. I’m at a standstill.”

Perplexed, I could only stare at her.

“What the hell does that mean?” I asked when she offered nothing more. She raised her head and met my eyes squarely.

“It means that… well, you and Atlas are off doing all kinds of things, Bianca. You started the coalition, and he’s renovating his casinos. Forny is being overhauled.”

I continued to stare at her.

“And?”

“And I’m not.”

She shrugged. “I feel so useless.”

I groaned and sat back, folding my arms under my chest.

“How many times have I told you to come and work for us?” I asked. “There’s a million things you could do—”

“No, Bee. That’s… no.”

“Why not?” I asked, struggling to understand.

She grunted. “I don’t expect you to understand, and I don’t want this to come out the wrong way…”

“I’m your twin sister, Dahlia. We’ve always understood each other. I just don’t understand this time. Why don’t you just come work for us? You don’t like Atlas?”

She appeared shocked by the suggestion.

“I love Atlas,” she answered sincerely, her eyes popping. “How could you even ask that?”

“Are you… jealous of our relationship?”

“Maybe… but not the way you’re thinking.”

Exasperated, I spread my hands over the table and sat forward again.

“Tell me, point blank, what it is you want, Dahlia.”

“I want to leave Covale City.”
