“Who did this?”

“I’ve told you everything I can,” Rachel said flatly. “And I don’t care how much you scream, yell, or threaten. I honestly can’t tell you anymore.”

I eyed her hatefully, the answer to my question creeping through the recesses of my mind.

“You’re lying!” I cried, jumping up again. “I’m not collateral. This is some story you and Ash concocted.”

“Briar!”

I raced out of the dining room toward the front of the house, ignoring Rachel’s calls behind me.

“ASH!” I howled. “Ash, where are you?”

Without warning, three flustered-looking guards towered over me as my foot touched the second-floor landing.

“Miss, you can’t be up here right now,” one of them growled softly. “Mr. Corpus is not to be disturbed.”

“My room is up here,” I snapped back.

“Is that where you’re going? We’ll escort you.”

One of them reached for my arm, and I wrenched my limb back, glaring challengingly at them.

“Do I need to remind you what happened to your good buddy Lochlin when he put his hands on me?” I hissed.

The words were like magic, causing all three men to draw back in unison.

“Take me to Ash or stay out of my way,” I went on bravely.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Rachel at the foot of the stairs, shaking her head in defeat.

“Let her go, guys,” the fae muttered. “I’ll take the blame for it.”

The guards stepped aside, none of them happy about my threat, but I didn’t care, and I raced toward the far end of the hall, using my senses to guide me toward Ash. Every footstep drew me closer, the recognizable sensation of heat and desire sweeping through me as I closed in on his presence.

His double doors opened before I could get to him first, and he stared at me with disappointment.

“What do you think you’re doing, Briar?”

“I want answers. Now.”

He gritted his teeth and pulled my arm, drawing me into the bedroom and closing the doors behind him. I glanced around, taking in the details of the room.

If my suite was an apartment, his was a whole house. The room was split into two floors, the second a loft-style room overlooking the main. The walls were painted in a deep gray hue, and the floor was finished in polished dark wood.

Everything in the room looked custom-made; a huge four-poster bed was set against the far wall. I couldn’t help but imagine what it would feel like for him to tie me up on that bed, while he explored every inch of my body.

But the opulence of the room was truly the last thing on my mind at the moment. Luxury wasn’t foreign to me, even if this was overkill, even for my upbringing.

Ash pursed his lips together and sat me on one of the wing chairs in front of his intricate wood fireplace.

“You can’t go around threatening my guards.”

“You killed your own guard,” I reminded him dryly. “My threats can’t scare them that much.”

“You’re not in a position to be making any demands,” he informed me, ambling toward a small, globe-shaped bar near the hearth. Opening the sphere, he removed a crystal decanter and held it up in an offering to me.

“I don’t want a drink, Ash. I want answers.”
