“I’ll see about dinner,” I growled, sliding off the side of the bed. “You should return to your room.”

“Ash…”

I didn’t turn around as I located my clothes.

“Ash?”

Exhaling, I met her eyes.

“Let’s not make this weird between us, okay?” she said, looking at me with wide eyes that needed confirmation I wouldn’t abandon her.

I smirked lightly, but inside, my gut was in turmoil. I shouldn’t have touched her at all. Staring into those beautiful blue irises, I knew where this was heading, and it was nowhere good.

“Should I have a plate sent up to you?”

She shook her head. “I’ll meet you downstairs.”

“I have business to attend to tonight,” I warned her. “It will be a quick dinner.”

She shrugged indifferently.

“That’s all the same to me,” she replied flatly. “I have nowhere else to go, anyway.”

Chapter14

Briar

Ash glanced at his cell phone again, making me wonder if he was checking the time or waiting for a call. I hesitated to ask as I pecked at my salad and risotto. It was delicious, the in-house chef a professional, but I had little appetite as I built up the courage to ask Ash what was really on my mind.

The fear of rejection was strong after the way he’d shut down in the bedroom when I’d tried to learn more about his family.

“Why do you keep looking at your phone?” I asked.

“I have to go soon,” he said.

“What does that mean?”

He eyed me across the massive table. “That I have to leave you. I suggest you get some rest.”

Raising my head, a small pout touched my lips, and I summoned the words from my core.

“What?” he growled, setting his fork down as if he already sensed what I would say.

“I’m bored,” I grumbled lightly. “There’s nothing for me to do here but read.”

Ash began to laugh and waved his hands around. “This is literally the biggest estate in the region,” he informed her. “If you can’t find something to do here, I’m afraid you’re not going to find anything to do anywhere.”

I shouldn’t have presented my request like that, and I tried again with more clarity.

“That’s not what I mean,” I explained quickly.

His black eyebrows rose in question. “Then what do you mean, Little Bunny?”

I tingled at the pet name but struggled to keep my thoughts on track. “I’m not just an ornament, Ash. I can do things, you know?”

He smirked lightly. “Oh, yes. I know.”

I groaned again and shook my head. “I don’t mean that, either!”
