“What?” I snapped.

“And a very good morning to you, my dear,” Avalon chirped.

“What did I tell you about calling me?” I hissed, in no mood for his antics.

“I’m sorry,” he replied, not sounding sorry in the least. “I thought you wanted news.”

I perked up slightly.

“What news? What do you have?”

The ancient wizard chuckled.

“Oh, now you’re happy to hear from me, aren’t you?”

“Cut the bullshit, Avalon. Do you have news, or don’t you?”

“I’ve found Ambrose descendants—particularly those of Valeria Ambrose.”

My heart jumped fully into my throat, making it almost impossible to speak for half a second.

“Ash? Are you still there?”

“I’m here.” I cleared my windpipe. “Who are they? Where can I find them?”

“Well, there’s good news and bad news on that front,” Avalon sighed. “Which should I give you first?”

“Avalon!”

“Fine. There is a single descendant I’ve found; a female, and she is in MacShire.”

“Is that the bad news or good news?” I breathed, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

“Well, I know you were hoping that she would be a fae for whatever reason, but she’s not. She’s a shifter, not a fae.”

I slumped back against the chair and looked at Rachel, who leaned forward, her gray eyes gleaming.

“Who is it?” she asked, her head cocked to the side.

“This is where things get a little complicated,” Avalon chuckled through the speaker. “Or perhaps incestuous?”

“What does that mean, Avalon?” I growled. “Stop talking in riddles.”

“Your girl, Briar, is a direct descendant of the fae you’re seeking.”

“WHAT?!” Both Rachel and I stared at one another, aghast by the information.

“Funny, huh?” Avalon chuckled.

“How?” I demanded.

“Father’s side. She’s a product of invitro fertilization, courtesy of Dr. Madison’s mad science experiments. That’s the best I can tell you.”

“But she’s not a fae,” I muttered, looking desperately at Rachel. “Can she…?”

I paused and glanced at the phone, not wanting to disclose any more to Avalon than he already knew. “Will she be able to do anything about the predicament?”

Rachel shrugged. “I doubt it, but I can look into it. I mean, rabbits don’t have magic that I know of.”
