My head jerked back, and I stared at him in confusion. “What?”

“You will either go home or stay here for the rest of your life.”

I laughed inappropriately. “Well, that just explains everything, doesn’t it?” I said, clapping my hands together. “Thank you so much for clarifying. I’m really glad you came by to tell me.”

His angular jaw twitched at the base, and his eyes narrowed. “I’m attempting to tell you—”

“And I’m clear now,” I sang brightly, throwing the blanket aside. “I’m going to be here for three weeks at least, maybe forever. Thank you, Mr. Demon.”

“Ash,” he growled, his annoyance palpable now. “Sit down.”

I instantly did as he asked. I was nervous, not stupid. Pursing my lips, I looked around the room.

“What is this place?”

“You’ll have everything you need here,” he said. “If you require anything, ask the guards.”

“You didn’t answer my question, though. Why am I here? What is this place?”

He folded his hands in front of him and pretended not to look at me, but I thought I caught him staring at me through his peripheral vision.

“You are on my estate,” he offered.

“Are we in MacShire still?” I asked, my head whipping around, as if I would know if I was still in my hometown.

“Does it matter?” he asked, and disappointment flooded me at the vague answer.

“Is that your way of saying that I’m never going to escape?”

He glowered. “I don’t recommend you trying,” he muttered. “You are in my care, Briar, but we do take security quite seriously here. I can’t be held responsible for the zealousness of my guards.”

Gooseflesh erupted over my skin, and I cleared my throat.

“I won’t try to escape,” I promised honestly. I had already determined that was not an option. “But you have to give me more. How long have I been here? You still haven’t told me why I’m here.”

“You were brought here last night, in the middle of the night. It is now quite late again.”

A twinge of hope sparked through me. I’d had no sense of time until that moment.

“A calendar would be nice,” I jested. “I could mark off the days of my imprisonment. Except there aren’t any windows in here.”

“You will be informed when the three weeks have concluded.”

“And I’m to take the word of my friendly neighborhood kidnappers, am I?” I jibed.

Ash’s face darkened again. “You’re not taking this very seriously.”

I wanted to scream and cry out, but instead, I began to laugh, the nervousness returning full force.

I willed myself to stop, but that only lasted a minute. The demon’s irritation was becoming fully palpable now, but the angrier he got, the more I chuckled.

Oh, gods. I would never last three weeks. And what was supposed to happen after three weeks to determine my fate?

I wished I could get a hold of my emotions, but at that moment, they were lost, and I was a mess.
