I found my voice.

“Valeria!” I thundered. “Let her go!”

“I do not have her, you insolent fool. You have her. I was not good enough for you, but I suppose the dilution of my bloodline will suffice in your offspring.”

I waited, afraid that I might say something that would endanger Briar if I antagonized the spirit holding her.

“What do you want, Valeria?” I growled.

“Nothing from you any longer, Ash. The curse is no more. You have found an escape through my bloodline. Brava, you pompous churl. May your progeny treat you as you have treated others. So mote it be.”

Briar seized once and gasped, her eyes returning to normal, and she wheezed, gazing around with huge eyes. I collected her in my arms.

“Are you all right?” I demanded, looking her over. “Briar, look at me!”

She blinked and nodded, shaking her head, a grin overcoming her face.

“I’m fine,” she laughed. “I think I just got possessed. It’s a lot less sexual than I thought it would be.”

The joke was terrible, but I laughed tremulously. I hugged her gently, kissing her forehead and drawing her toward me.

“Did you hear what she said?” I rasped, barely believing it myself. “Were you conscious?”

“I was there, but not there. What happened? Who was it?”

I decided to spare her the details and give her the crux.

“We’re free,” I told her, barely believing it. “The curse is lifted.”

She raised her head to look at me in wonder. “Really?” she whispered. “Are you sure? I feel like I would remember if my parasite had said that.”

I nodded, laughing.

“I’m sure,” I breathed, raining kisses over her face and cheeks. “It worked. The curse is lifted.”

She fell into my arms, clinging to me happily, and I rocked her to me gently until our breaths matched at an even pace and our heart arches were glowing in sync again.

Rachel had been right. Everything was going to be okay. Even a demon like me got my happy ending.

Chapter34

Briar

Full darkness filled the room when I opened my eyes again, but for two glowing blue orbs pinned on me from the neighboring pillow. I smiled, instantly comforted by the thought that Ash had been watching over me this whole time.

“Did you sleep well, Little Bunny?” he asked softly, and I nodded, reaching for him, eager to draw him closer toward me.

I hadn’t even remembered falling asleep, but the power of his breaths, the security of his arms around me, had lulled me into submission, and a sense of safety had so consumed me, I’d had no choice but to fall into it.

“Good.”

Slowly, he leaned in to kiss my lips gently, my arms circling his neck as I drew him closer. Our mouths meshed, and I parted my lips to let his tongue slither inside. A small moan grew from inside me, the insurmountable need of being with him overtaking me in a way that I hadn’t quite fully realized until this moment.

I anticipated the familiar shiver that ran down my spine, as if it were the first time we had been together. I knew now that it was always going to be this way between us, no matter how much time went by. We were mates, bonded to each other forever now, eternally.

He moved to pin me down against the mattress, but this time, I wanted the control, to feel as though I had some semblance of dominance in my own life. Pulling my lips back, I shook my head lightly.

“No,” I whispered before kissing him again.
