“I can and always have taken care of myself,” Abby said shortly, slipping on her panties before facing me again.

I couldn’t help but sneak a peek at her hard nipples, the sight of her nudity instantly arousing me again. She followed my gaze and slid her t-shirt on.

Point taken.

“But I need to know what your plans are, Elijah. Not knowing is giving me anxiety. For all I know, I’m going to end up in the middle of a war one day.”

“I’ll let you know when I’m ready to act,” I promised her.

“When?” she echoed. “So, you’re definitely doing something?”

I grimaced, wishing I had a direct response for her when I didn’t have one for myself.

“I heard what you said. Orson has been running things for two hundred years. You’re right. If everything was that simple, I probably shouldn’t be here. I should just accept my fate and walk away—with you.”

Her face softened.

“But it’s not that simple,” I continued. “Someone put me in that grave. My ‘death’ was not some oversight. Someone wanted everyone to think I was dead, and for what other reason than to take over my territory? Orson is the only one who stands to gain from that.”

“Orson was with you! He fought at your side!” she insisted. “He loved you, Elijah.”

Did I detect a note of uncertainty?

“And that doesn’t change the fact that he’s trafficking humans, does it?” I added.

Abby gritted her teeth. “You’re wrong about that.”

“We’ll see.”

Exasperated, Abby threw up her hands. “I don’t understand how you’re so eager to believe Ash without looking at all the facts, Elijah.”

I stared at her, mildly annoyed by her defensiveness of him.

Has she caught some kind of feelings for him?

“I trust Ash with my life,” I told her flatly.

“And I know Orson.”

We had a mild, terse stare-down. Abby broke it.

“So what? You’re going to just stay here forever?”

I scoffed and looked around my posh suite. “I mean, it’s no garden shed, but it will do for a while,” I replied.

Abby scowled at me, and I offered her a grin.

“I’m kidding,” I told her, kissing her cheek. “I appreciate everything you did for me when I got here.”

She snuggled into my chest, and my hand slipped into her curls.

“You still can’t go out, not if you don’t want the Verity Gang to know you’re here.”

I exhaled at the reminder. “I’m ironing out the kinks,” I explained. “And we’re making headway.”

“You and Ash?”

“He’s sent some men, too,” I added. Pulling my head back, I peered at her. “You won’t tell Orson I’m here, will you?”
