The effect that Elijah had on me was no different than a spell. Why else would I have been so careless, so recklessly stupid to succumb to him when there were so many dangers?

I rushed through the twining streets, searching for the two shifters who had vanished, my hands trembling.

But after half an hour of searching, I had to give up. They hadn’t returned to their posts, and I still had drops of my own to make. I couldn’t very well take off with Orson’s stash on me.

I’ll deliver the rest and go looking for Rob and Carter again,I decided, willing my breaths to even out. Through my peripheral vision, I thought I saw someone following me, and when I doubled back around, I figured out who it was.

“Are you out of your mind?” I hissed at Silver.

He spun around, shocked by my sneak-up, a sheepish expression overtaking his face.

“Why are you following me?!” I demanded.

“Mr. Webb asked me to watch over you,” he admitted. A fusion of relief and exasperation twined through my gut.

“No,” I whispered, looking behind me. “You’re going to get caught.”

“I won’t!” he protested indignantly.

“I just caught you!” I retorted. “You don’t know this town. Just… just go back to the hotel. I’ll come there after I’m done working.”

Silver opened his mouth to argue, but I cut him off. “Are you immortal?”

He balked at the query and shook his head.

“Me neither. This means, if there’s an issue, we’re both outnumbered. I have a much better chance of surviving on my own here than you.”

“I can’t leave you,” Silver told me firmly. “Mr. Webb gave me instructions.”

Grimacing, I realized talking to him was futile. He was Elijah’s man, not mine.

“Stay out of sight. I promise, if any of Orson’s men suspect you’re following me, you’ll be dead before you see them coming.”

I honestly couldn’t say that was true anymore. As far as I knew, there was now a target on my own head, but I hadn’t lied about the rest of it. I didn’t want Silver’s blood or anyone else’s on my hands.

“Noted,” he told me gruffly, and I rushed off to complete my day—shifting into my animal form to do it.

I wasn’t sure what kind of shifter Silver was, except I was certain he wasn’t a wolf. I could easily smell my kind on others, and he had more of a woodsy scent. As a guard, I guessed he was a bear, without the red hair and green eyes of the foxes. A deer or rabbit didn’t suit his size. In any case, he wouldn’t be able to keep up with me in my wolf form.

And I proved myself right, the sensation of being watched diminishing as I raced away, leaving Silver in my dust.

But as the afternoon gave way into evening, and I simply dropped off my deliveries without a word to anyone, I started to regret my actions. The silence of my cell phone all day was making me incredibly nervous.

I can’t do this anymore. I have to get out of town before something happens to me.

I’d taken a massive gamble and played it too riskily. Now I had to pack up what I could and lie low, at least until this mess with Elijah was resolved. Only when I was sure that Pario City was safe for me could I return.

He never did answer my question about running off,I realized as I made my way home.

I still had a ton of cash in my bag that needed to go to Orson. I pursed my lips, considering taking it with me to start fresh somewhere. I could go to Elijah and plead with him to just forget about all this so we could run off together.

For what felt like the ten thousandth time that day, I peered over my shoulder at the curb before racing up the side of my house and letting myself into the shed to change back into my human body and dress. While I did that, I formulated an escape. The walls were closing in—I didn’t need any supernatural senses to tell me that. My luck had run out. Elijah was going out in public, and we’d been seen together, even though Orson thought I’d chosen him.

He wouldn’t go easy on me, no matter how much he lusted after me.

But Elijah had rejected me before and refused to answer me when I asked if we could leave now.

He won’t leave with me. He’s too hellbent on revenge now—and getting his territory back.
