The prince’s fingers curled, making fists on the table. “That isn’t the question I expected.”

“Yet, if you answer right, I’ll get all the answers I need.”

The corner of Liam’s mouth twitched. “You’re a gambler, Desfan. Tell me, do you think that was a good gamble?”

“Is thatyourquestion?”

Liam huffed a hard laugh. “I see no point in joining forces with you. When Grayson betrayed me, I lost my chance to destroy my father.”

“If you help us, we’ll stand a much better chance against him.”

“Except you’re not just fighting him.”

Desfan straightened in his chair. “What do you mean?”

“Is that the question you truly want me to answer?”

He ground his teeth. “Yes.”

Liam almost smiled. He tugged his hands off the table, settling them on his lap. “My father has been making inroads with some notable people in Zennor for the past couple of years. He’s been discreet—he even kept his dealings from me. But I’m his spymaster. I discovered things. Peter has been involved as well, and it seems my father is willing to let him take the credit.”

“You need to be more specific. Who in Zennor is Henri talking to?”

“I don’t know everyone involved.”

“Buhari?”

“No. The king is unaware of my father’s maneuverings. But I believe there are members of the noble class, as well as the criminal elite, who have allied with my father. And there are factions within many of the clans who are siding with Ryden. What this means for you, Serjan, is that when war comes, you’ll be facing enemies from the north and the south.”

Desfan’s fingers dug into his sleeves, keeping his arms crossed. His mind was spinning. This was disastrous. Made more so by the fact that Serene was on her way to Zennor right now.

Fates.

He needed to send her a message, but he had no idea when it would actually reach her.

“Where have you been keeping my brother?” Liam asked, his voice quieter than before.

Desfan didn’t consider lying—he assumed Liam would be able to tell, and he wanted to support honesty between them. “Grayson isn’t here.”

A muscle in Liam’s cheek jumped. Then he cursed with surprising heat. “You sent him to Ryden.”

“He volunteered,” Desfan said.

“My brother is an idiot,” Liam gritted out. “You’ve sent him to his death.”

“He seemed confident.”

“That’s because he’s a fool. And when it comes to Mia, he’ll risk anything—especially his own life.”

“You would know—you exploited him by threatening her.”

Liam just shook his head. “I expected you to separate us. I didn’t expect you to send him toRyden.”

“He said he was my sister’s best chance.”

“He is, but that doesn’t mean he’ll succeed in rescuing her.”

“Why?”
