“Where is Yana?”

My voice was far from human. It was a deep low growl. So close to the full moon, my other nature was harder to control and contain.

“Bitch,” he croaked when I released him and allowed him to speak.

A loud crack followed when my fist made contact with his nose. Blood splattered all over him.

“Psycho,” he mumbled as he tried to staunch the blood flow from his now broken nose.

“Do you think it is a good idea to piss me off? I won’t ask again. What did you do to Yana?”

He smelled like fear and despair. Fuck, in such close quarters, it was so hard not to break his neck.

“Nothing. I… she didn’t want to go.”

“If you’re lying, I’ll find you and rip you apart, piece by piece, until you’ll beg me to kill you.”

“She’s there, man. I swear.” He pointed toward the dark forest.

“Piece of shit. If you say a word to anyone….”

He nodded, holding his nose. “Just let me go, man.”

I leaned through the broken window, and my eyes flashed red. The effects of my eyes on humans are always so predictable. The smell of fresh warm urine that trickled down the guy’s leg wafted into my nose.

“I can always find you. There’s no hiding from me,” I whispered with a low growl that rose from my chest. I didn’t have time to lose on this peace of shit. Yana was alone. In the forest. Next to the portal.

We were sure we had closed that portal, but there was always a chance something or someone could slip from the other side or linger around in the forest.

Turning my back to the car, I climbed onto my motorcycle and drove down the road. Now that I started to feel calmer, I could get a hold of the bond. My aggression had tuned it out. When my adrenaline lowered again, I could think straight.

My nose was filled with this douchebag’s scent. I inhaled and exhaled a few times, focusing on Yana. I probably scared her already when I barged into her house wounded. The last thing I wanted or needed was to frighten her so much that she would not be able to trust me anymore.

Yana was in my blood. She was my mate. I had to find the right words, the right way to tell her. I waited for her all my life. I’ll be damned if I’ll let her slip away a second time.

Memories from twenty years ago flooded my mind. It was a stormy night. Ruby had patched me up in her old kitchen. I always hated that ugly brown and green linoleum. I was wounded, with the silver lodged deep in my back. She worked her magic and picked the bullets out, one by one, with her long slender fingers. The bullet wounds hurt like hell.

“It’s time for me to enter Yana’s life.” I remember the words as if it was yesterday.

Ruby continued working on my back. “You can’t do that, Soren. Please. Let her have a normal life, a human life. I care about you and am devoted to the cause, but all I got from my connection with you was heartache.”

“I can protect her.”

“You can’t. Why haven’t you and the pack protected my daughter.”

Tears lodged into her chest. I could smell the change in her disposition. Yana’s mother was a mate, a fated one to one of my pack brothers. They were both slaughtered by Demons. Her mate couldn’t protect her, and we arrived too late.

“Please, release your claim. I beg of you.”

“Do you have any idea what you are asking of me, Ruby?”

“Yes. I’m asking you to let her be happy. Let her worry about bills and not about demons and the end of the world. All I want for my granddaughter is a normal, happy life.”

“She feels it, too. She knows something is missing. You know how the mating call burns inside your blood. How perfectly blissful you feel when your mate is near you. How you would give them heaven and earth to keep them happy.”

“My dear friend, my mate died by the blade. It was so long ago. All I remember is pain and agony, and that aching loneliness one feels when the one you love is forever gone, and you’ll never be whole again.”

I sighed, knowing Ruby was right. “I’ll do it. I’ll let her go.”
