To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement.

"What? Why were we not informed of this?" One of the other councilmen demanded.

The queen smiled serenely at us before turning and saying, "We will discuss this when we are back in the privacy of the palace." It felt like she was a mother scolding children. When she turned back to us, her face was taut with unspoken anger, and I knew then that the man who had asked was the other traitor. "What can we do to help Tessa?"

She looked at each of us individually, waiting for a response. None came because none of us had any idea what to do to help her.

"As you know, the healing waters are always available—"

"We appreciate that, Your Majesty. However, I think moving Tessa would be inadvisable right now." Griff's tone was polite, but his words were stilted as though he was in pain. "If her body is in this stasis, we have no idea what might happen if we try and remove her from the temple. If her soul has separated from her body, then moving the body could make it more difficult for her soul to return to it."

The queen nodded. "I understand. We will leave you to it, but please, if things become urgent, feel free to use your magic to get to the palace as quickly as possible."

An advisor coughed at her words and sputtered, "Your Majesty, that's not advisable. They could do anything!"

"I have made my decision." She turned to walk out, the men trailing behind her, but at the threshold, she turned back to us for a moment as she said, "I do hope Tessa comes back to us. She is a rare light in the dark. One that should be treasured. And I pray that she is successful in whatever she is doing right now."

"Thank you, Your Majesty," Finn said, bowing low once more.

We all repeated the motion, and as silence reigned after her departure, I knew her final words were echoing in all our minds. I just hoped that Tessa would return to us.

Tessa

I knew somewhere in the back of my mind, and the guys had told me at the very beginning that returning to my old life wasn't guaranteed. And honestly, what kind of life did I have to return to without them?

The five of them had my heart. My foster mother was amazing, but we’d grown apart over the last few years. It wasn’t just about her, though. It was the fact that I’d never get to share any of the places or things that meant a lot to me with my guys.

Apparently, I’d remained quiet for too long because Laelak asked, “Do you understand, Daughter of Eve?”

“Why do you call me that?” The question blurted out of my mouth before I could stop it.

The dark primal dragon made a chuffing sound that reminded me of a laugh.

“Because you are a descendant of Eve, one of the most powerful primal dragons and one of the greatest elemental dragons to ever live,” Laelak replied.

“He was in love with her,” the dark primal clarified.

“But I’m not a dragon. How can I be descended from one?”

“Did you or did you not shift into a dragon in Agartha?” the light primal asked.

I sighed. “I mean, I did, but couldn’t that just be the random Agarthan shifter magic?”

“Agarthans can shift into animals that exist in their world. Dragons do not exist there.” Light was talking to me like I was a crazy person.

Dark shook its head like Light was getting it all wrong. “If nothing else, think of it like this; maybe you inherited some of her spirit or magic.”

“Okay, I guess,” I murmured. It wasn’t that I didn’t believe them, just that I didn’t understand how something like that could happen.

“Maybe descendant is the wrong word. Think of it as a type of magical reincarnation,” Dark tried again.

Laelak paced toward me. “Part of her magic now resides in you, just as part of the other elemental primals do as well.”

“This is so weird,” I muttered to myself as I tried to process what they were telling me.

“Weird or not, it’s the truth,” Light said, sounding slightly offended.
