Together.I knew she didn’t mean it in the same sense that I heard it, but it gave me hope.

“Daithi believes we may both regain the powers of old—” I cut short the rest of the sentence.

She raised a golden brow. “When? How?”

“As far as we are aware, you and I are the first to find their other halves. Everything is theoretical.”

“And this theory is?” Her eyes were wide with curiosity. I hesitated, and she prompted, “You can tell me.”

“He believes we need to consummate the bond,” I blurted.

The silence that followed made my palms sweat, but I said nothing, allowing her time to consider it.

Hedri, my god of love, please reassure her of my honest intentions. My desire for not just her body, but her heart and soul, too. Please help her understand and not be fearful.

She looked at her hands when she asked, “A soul pair is a romantic bond?”

My stomach dropped. “Is romance objectionable to you?”

She blushed, a dark pink color I watched rush upward from her chest to her face. I wanted to know where it started. Where else it spread.

She stuttered as she replied, “No. Erm. No. It’s just … I don’t know anything about romance.”

“Neither do I.” I smiled. “But I’d like to learn.”

“You would?”

“I am enchanted by you, Clawdia. I have been since I met you as a cat, and I continue to find reason to care for you. You turned human, which reminded you of your traumatic past, but you wanted to help save my friend. This journey has been difficult for you, but you’ve been brave and faced it all. Even being a cat again—”

She pressed her small fingers against my lips and interrupted, “I didn’t want to be a cat again. It was an accident.”

I frowned, and her fingers fell from my face. “What?”

The words poured out of her in a rush, “I’ve been feeling more settled in myself, and today I looked at myself and realized that I’m not Margaret Claudia anymore. I’m Clawdia, and my past is past. My parents and Darren Jenkins are long dead, and I won’t let my memories hold me hostage and ruin my future.”

Pride rose in me, and I beamed down at her. “This is fantastic news, Little Cat.”

“Then Daithi caught me on the way out of the bathroom and said he wanted to make up for his poor behavior to me, but I didn’t want to be a cat. I wanted to stay with you and Charlie. I enjoy being with you. Daithi thought I was saying yes to him, but I was nodding to something I was thinking about. It was an accident.”

I thought it was strange that Daithi wanted to apologize for his actions by taking her away from me but concentrated on the most important information that her rambling revealed.

She likes being with me. She wanted to stay with me.

“I’m glad to know you like being with me.” I asked hesitantly, “Does this mean you aren’t objecting to romance?”

She bit her lip. “I don’t know how to feel about this, Zaide.”

Her stomach growled, and I smiled. “Why don’t I feed you while you think?”

“Yes, please.”

I nodded and placed her on the sofa gently before gathering a plate of something Charlie ordered and walking to the kitchenette to warm it.

She watched me with a puzzled expression as I came back to her, placed her food on the coffee table, and moved her back into my arms.

I needed to touch her, hold her. Now that she knew she was mine, and after the events of the last couple days where I almost lost her, everything inside me wanted to stay as close to her as possible. She didn’t protest.

She ate like she’d never had food before and groaned in pleasure. The sound had an arousing effect on me, but I ignored it.
