This is crazy.

“Okay, so I’m a seeker, and my Bradbury line are also seekers?”

“Yes. They breed seekers.”

“What do you fall under?”

“Well, the Blacks are good at potions.”

“Right.” I was a little speechless.

Information about my birth parents was the one thing I could never find. And now I knew why. They didn’t want me to find them.

Lydia was hesitant now. “How did you find out, if you don’t mind my asking?”

I couldn't think quickly when my mind was so overwhelmed with new information. “Winnie told me.”

“Oh, Winnie told you. That’s great.”

I rushed to explain my lack of knowledge. “She didn’t explain a lot. We were having an argument. Over her cat.”

“What about her cat?”

“Well, Clawdia spends a lot of time at my house. She was angry, thinking I wanted to steal her.”

“Oh,” Lydia sounded so surprised that I knew for sure that I’d fucked up. I was cursing myself internally when she laughed and said, “Well, no wonder she was so angry. That cat is her familiar.”

I feigned shock. “What? She seems like such a normal cat.” Clawdia glared at me, and I stuck my tongue out at her.

“Not normal at all. You know what one is, right?”

“Only what I’ve heard from films.”

“Yeah, they are a little more special than that. Hardly anyone can call a familiar. It takes a lot of practice and a lot of luck. Winnie attracted loads of attention when she got Clawdia, and familiars gravitate to strong witches. No wonder she was angry with her familiar for being with you all the time. You’ve clearly got a lot of strength.”

“Yeah, that explains it. So, I won’t get a familiar?”

Clawdia glared again. I pressed my lips together to stop a laugh escaping. Jealous Clawdicat.

“Not unless you work for one. I can send you a book on it if you like.”

“Yeah, that would be great. Hey, listen, I’ve known about this for a little while now, and I’ve been hearing whispers about something happening, some kind of event. I thought it might be good to meet some people, get a few more answers. Do you know what that’s about?”

It was a left field question, and I wasn’t expecting her to immediately respond, but Lydia was full of surprises. “I don’t know what you’ve been hearing, but this event isn’t like a charity ball. It’s a serious event for serious witches.”

“Well, maybe I want to be a serious witch.”

She sighed. “It starts this evening, so unless you can get a flight to Sweden this afternoon and meet me in Eskilstuna, then you are going to miss it.”

“So, here’s the thing … I’m already in Sweden. I sort of knew something was happening here. I just didn’t know when or where.”

“Wow! Okay, that’s awesome. I can meet you now and introduce you to some people before tonight.”

CHAPTER26

CHARLIE

On the drive to the coffeehouse, I felt numb. I hadn’t processed what Lydia had told me properly yet. Even telling Clawdia, Zaide, and Daithi was like someone else was speaking.
