“And now you’re blaming me because your cat is upset you haven’t told her anything. Talk about ridiculous.” She huffed and moved to the kitchen to refill her glass.

An awkward silence followed. I stood to hop down from the sofa and go to bed. I didn’t want to talk anymore.

Before I could leave, Winnie whispered, “I’m sorry. I know I’m keeping secrets and not treating you like I should, but Mary is right. This is something I want to do, and I’ve been magically sworn not to tell another soul about our project. I promise when it’s all over, I’ll tell you everything.”

I sighed.Yes. Okay. If it’s something you really want to do, then I don’t want to stop you. I just don’t like the distance between us now.

“We don’t have to be so distant. I’ll tell you everything I can, and you can always tell me anything. You didn’t tell me about Charlie’s guests. Did he like the flower?”

I laughed in my head, remembering his reaction, and begrudgingly told her.He thought I was a terrible cat for catching him a flower instead of a mouse or a bird. He put it in a pint glass. Silly man.

She smiled, enjoying my happiness. “You said the guests were interesting. Were they family? Have you discovered more about the mystery that is Charles Bennett?”

Honestly, this has only added to the mystery.

“Really? Do tell.”

I didn’t know how much I should say, but if anyone knew about the existence of people from other realms, it was Winnie. His guests were three giant men.

“Ooo, tell me more.”

Paranormal, otherworldly men.

She waited for me to continue. “Wait, what? You’re joking.” She shook her head. “Oh my goddess. What a plot twist. How did Charlie know them?”

I told her about him getting emails and that he set up cameras to see who they were. That’s why I was so interested to see too. I explained that when they appeared on the camera this morning, Charlie panicked and ran to meet them and dragged them home.

“And what did they look like?”

“What did who look like?” Mary asked, coming back with her glass in hand.

“Clawdia is telling me about Charlie’s guests. You’ll never guess who they are.”

“Prostitutes?”

“No. Otherworlders.”

Wait. You knew about them?I asked Winnie, but she ignored me.

“Yeah, okay.” Mary rolled her eyes.

“No, seriously. Clawdia wouldn’t lie. She’s about to tell me what they look like.”

“If she’s telling the truth, why don’t we just knock on the door and see what they look like for ourselves?” She raised her eyebrow and took a swig of her wine. “That familiar of yours must have been a shitty writer in the past, because this reeks of bullshit.”

It’s not! You couldn’t see them if you wanted to because there’s one with magic that keeps them disguised from people who they don’t want to see their true forms.

“Magic?” Winnie whispered excitedly. Mary coughed, and Winnie told her what I said.

“Magic like us? Like a witch?” Mary asked excitedly.

I don’t know. He’s not a witch. I didn’t see him cast any spells like you do.

“A potion, then?”

I didn’t see him when he did it, but I didn’t get the impression it was a potion.

“Interesting. Tell us about them, then. What do they really look like?”
