“And he has an active imagination,” Savida added.

Charlie suddenly beamed. “Thank you.”

“Do you feel better now that you have emptied yourself of your suspicions?” Daithi asked.

Charlie cringed. “Never say ‘emptied yourself’ again. That was reason and logic at work, not a case of verbal diarrhea.”

“Diarrhea?” Savida interrupted at the sound of an unfamiliar word. He loved learning new things about planets and their people.

“Endless shit.”

“That’s horrific. That happens?” He pulled a face showing his discomfort.

Charlie looked equally disturbed. “You don’t shit?”

“Yes, but not endlessly. Are you cursed?”

“It’s not a curse. It’s an illness, and you just have to let it flow.” Charlie chuckled.

Daithi huffed his disapproval. “Illness that flows. This is a cursed realm.”

Charlie waved his hand dismissively. “You keep saying cursed. We don’t have curses. You’re such drama queens.”

“You keep calling us queens when we are not ladies nor rulers.” Daithi looked at Savida as though he might know the answers. Savida just shrugged.

Charlie moaned and leaned his head into his hands. “Jesus Christ, this is going to be difficult.”

“Jesus? Who is this? Do you speak to spirits, human?” I asked.

While Savida was interested in the people, their language, and their culture, I was interested in their beliefs and their wars.

“Of a sort.” Charlie shook his head as though his overcrowded thoughts would fall out of his tiny pink ears and make room for something more important. “Stop fucking distracting me. I need to know more about the Margaret situation before I commit to helping you. I like you weirdos, and I don’t get the impression you’re evil, but I need to know she’ll be safe when we find her.”

I sighed. He’d proven he was trustworthy and was looking out for my soul pair. He deserved to know the truth. “Daithi’s vision was of a girl, but he heard my voice say the name ‘Margaret’ and something else. He believes she is my soul pair. I will not go into much detail, but it is unheard of for my race to meet their soul pair. I would die before harm came to her.”

He stared at me and must have seen something in my eyes, because he nodded and said, “Okay, I’ll help find her.”

“Thank you,” I whispered. Then I turned to Daithi, “Show him.”

“Show me what?”

Daithi nodded. “Margaret.”

In a practiced movement I had seen many times before, Daithi waved his hands and, just as he explained the realms, created an image of who we believed to be my soul pair.

Charlie pushed away from the table in a panic. “What the hell?”

“You have been handling everything very well so far. Why are you just now getting overwhelmed?” Daithi asked calmly.

“Because although you’ve got weird accents, I’m hearing you speak English, so it’s easy to pretend that you’re just wearing a really good costume.” He rubbed the heels of his hands into his eyes. “I’m going to need so much therapy when this is all over.”

“Now you are behaving like a queen of drama.” Savida’s chair squeaked across the floor as he stood. He picked up the mat and the glass of water and placed it on Charlie’s head. Then he took the flower from the glass and bowed, presenting it to Charlie, “Your Royal Highness.”

Charlie stared speechlessly at Savida.

“He seems to be mentally broken. Perhaps we will need to find a new human to help us search for Margaret,” I teased.

Charlie snapped out of his bewilderment and glared at me. “No. I’m not broken. I’ll find her.” He took the glass and the mat off his head, ignoring Savida’s giggling, then muttered, “Bloody otherworlders trying to take my sanity.”
