Charlie huffed impatiently. “She’s being needy. Probably bored out of her fucking brain staring at Daithi all day.”

I was happy to oblige her needs, and so I picked her up and cuddled her close to my chest, her soft fur brushing my chin.

Charlie continued, “What are we supposed to do now? I can’t find Savida without divine intervention or a magic faei, and neither are looking likely right now.”

Clawdia meowed and squirmed in my grip.

I understood his panic. Only moments ago, my heart pounded with the anxiety that Savida was going to come to harm. But panic was not useful while we could do nothing. “Calm, Charlie. Daithi may see the information we need to find Savida as we speak. We can only wait.” I stroked Clawdia, trying to soothe her agitation, and my hand came away dirty. “What have you been up to, Little Cat? Why are you covered in filth?”

She meowed an answer.

Charlie came closer to look at her fur. “It looks like cobwebs and … salt? Is that salt? What the fuck have you been doing? Visiting the basement witches?”

She meowed three times.

“She clearly has much that she wishes to tell us about her journey,” I noted.

“She’ll have to wait.” We turned, surprised at the sound of the voice, to see Daithi awake and pulling himself into an upright position. He looked at us with one green raised eyebrow and asked, “Where’s Savida?”

The blood drained from my face, and Charlie tensed next to me. I placed Clawdia on the floor carefully. She meowed three times in protest and clawed at my trousers.

“He is missing. We think your vision has come true, and we need to find him,” I said, bracing myself for his reaction.

“No,” Daithi whispered. “No.”

“I’m so sorry, Daithi,” Charlie mumbled.

“What happened? Did you see who took him?”

I began, “We left him to shop—”

Daithi surged up off the sofa and shouted in my face. “You left him? After my vision warned us of this?”

“We were tired—” I tried to explain but knew there was no explaining why we failed him. Failed them both.

“Tired? You knew he would be in danger. You should have been watching him!”

I lowered my head and nodded, feeling truly ashamed.

Charlie interrupted, “We’re not trying to make excuses, and we know you’re angry with us, but we need you to help find him.”

“I won’t need your assistance.” He closed his eyes and began searching for Savida through their bond.

Charlie, however, didn’t know that and asked, “What is he doing?”

“He is bonded to Savida and can search for him through that bond. It shouldn’t take long,” I whispered.

Daithi opened his eyes, and pain poured from them in a single tear. “I can’t find him.”

We were silent for a moment. “He isn’t in the human realm any longer?” I asked, confused.

Daithi shook his head and closed his eyes. “I could still find him if he had been portaled away.”

“He could be hidden with magic,” I suggested.

“Or dead.”

I shook my head. “You would know in your soul if he were dead. I refuse to believe that was his fate. We will find him.” I took a breath. “Your vision. What was it?”
