“That’s none of your concern, cat,” Daithi spat.

I flinched, and Zaide squeezed my fist again. He growled, “Do not talk to her in such a manner. She is undeserving.”

“She is to blame for Savida’s demise!” He pointed, his hand shaking with fury. “And if anything happens to his fire while in the hands of the witches, then she will pay the price for it.” He narrowed his eyes on me, and the power of his magic pressed against me. I trembled.

Zaide’s hand tightened on me. “Do not threaten her again, or you will find I am less sympathetic to your emotions.”

Charlie agreed. “Daithi, I think that’s a tad harsh. She was a cat. What was she supposed to do to stop it?”

I rushed to add, “I didn’t know their plans. I only knew something was wrong when Winnie magicked my food to stop me from seeing anything that she was doing.”

“She magicked your food and disabled you?” Zaide asked, his big purple eyes focused on me.

“Yes. Otherwise, I would have been here jumping on Daithi earlier.” I saw the looks on their faces and wanted to defend Winnie. “She tried to fix it when she felt how scared I was. She was reluctant to hurt Savida, too. Mary controls her. I know it’s no excuse but—”

“It is no excuse. My lover lies in a bed upstairs, his fire about to be used in a spell which will remove him from this world and kill his body.” Daithi’s voice wavered.

I bowed my head and whispered, “I’m sorry.”

Charlie spoke after a moment’s silence. “We need a plan to find them before it gets to the point of no return.” He had a look on his face that I had seen a lot as I sat on his lap as a cat. It told me the cogs in his brain were working at full capacity and he was formulating a plan.

“I think Daithi and I should see if they are still at 78 Acre Drive. And if they aren’t there, we can see if they’ve left any hints about where they have gone. Zaide and Clawdia can go back to Winnie’s and search for clues there. We need to know more about witches and about this project. If you can get her laptop to me, I might find something on there.”

Zaide nodded. “We can do this,” he agreed for me, but I had my reservations about … well, everything.

Walking. Being human again. Breaking into Winnie’s. Feeling. Being alone with a god-like man who looked at me like I hung the moon.

“Can we leave now?” Daithi asked Charlie. He’d stopped pacing and now awaited instruction like a soldier.

Charlie studied Zaide and me for a moment before nodding at Daithi. “We can go as soon as you’re ready.”

CHAPTER12

CHARLIE

How is this my life?

Daithi walked up to the guest room to get ready for the day while I sat at the table, observing the craziest situation.

A woman who used to be my neighbor’s cat was polishing off the rest of her breakfast like she was still part animal. My winged otherworlder friend was in imminent danger of losing his life. A green-haired faei was losing his sanity as well as his heart.

Thinking of hearts, I turned my attention to Zaide. He was sure this cat-woman was Margaret, his soul pair, and if his monster dick hadn’t been up for action this morning, I might have doubted him.

She didn’t seem to have the same instant infatuation with him as he did with her, though, which I was both concerned about for his sake and relieved for my own. After all, she was, or had been, my cat. Mine.

I rubbed my head, trying to part the weird possessive thoughts from the problem-solving ones.

This is crazy. I need answers. Who is she? Clawdia the cat or Margaret the human? What do we even call her?

I needed the pieces of the puzzle to fit together, and I knew what piece to start with. “Stay here for two seconds. I just want to grab something to show you.”

I ran to my office and slid the photo of Daithi’s vision of Claudia into my hand and jogged back. I handed it to her, and she automatically reached for it with sadness on her face.

As she stared down, I took a moment to look at her. She was beautiful. There was something innocent but sexy about her features. Maybe it was the combination of her wide violet eyes and her full red lips. The way her hair made me think of caramel.

“This is me,” she mumbled. “Where did you get this?”

I looked at Zaide, whose expression brightened with yet another confirmation that she was his soul pair. Ignoring her question, I pushed for more. “You’re sure? This girl’s name is Margaret, isn’t it?”
