“Put her down and leave with your life,” I roared.

They turned their heads to look at me, and their eyes gave away their secrets. I sensed magic covering them. They were otherworlders. I didn’t know what kind, as they were all disguised as human, like me.

Why are otherworlders kidnapping my soul pair?

“Deal with him,” one said and turned back around.

The swell of magic in the air gave away their intentions. They were creating a portal.

They are escaping to another realm with my soul pair.

With a roar, my fists crashed into the nose of one man who charged toward me. The shadows rejoiced. Blood spurted, and I heard the familiar crunch of breaking bones. Debilitated, he fell to the floor.

He didn’t have time to use any magic he possessed.

The next male rushed me as I stepped over his fallen comrade. I wanted to toy with him. I wanted him to feel fear and experience the truest defeat. A flash of blue made my heart stop. The portal was forming, and I would soon lose them.

I dodged the attacks and raced past him. Pulling the man holding Clawdia away from the forming portal, I separated his grip on her and swung her behind me.

“Zaide!” she gasped and hid her head in the dip of my spine. She was trembling, and I tried hard not to growl in fury and frighten her further.

“Why?” I picked up the male creating the portal—I assumed he was faei—and threw him against the wall. The portal stopped growing but glowed like a swirling moon between two buildings. “Why did you try to take her?” I shouted.

Is someone trying to stop me from bonding to my soul pair? Is it just coincidence? Unlucky circumstance?

Unfortunately, I had forgotten how fragile other beings were. In the fall, he hit his head against the cobbled ground. The bleeding skull and unconsciousness told me I wouldn’t be getting my question answered.

I turned to the two conscious beings and glared. “Why did you try to take her? What are you?”

“We were only following orders. Please.” The second attacker hovered over the first, crouched in a bloody puddle.

The one who’d taken her stood to the side, glaring. I could see him considering the situation, plotting whether he could complete his job. I didn’t know his powers, if he had any, and decided not to chance it.

Keeping Clawdia behind me, I walked along the furthest wall, away from the attackers, not turning my back on them until we were safely out of the alleyway.

I sighed and wrapped my arms around my trembling soul pair. “It’s okay, Little Cat. You’re safe.” Her knees folded, and I picked her up and continued walking back the way we came, stroking her back reassuringly.

My eyes still roamed the streets for danger; my blood still raged with fear, anger, and adrenaline. Humans had their phones out, recording the spectacle, but they scattered as I stormed back to the coffee shop.

“There you are,” Charlie called, jogging over when he saw us approaching. He spotted Clawdia shaking in my arms and asked, “What happened?”

“Otherworlders tried to take her. But she is safe now.” I couldn’t go into more detail without my anger rising. We moved away from the crowd before I asked, “What of the witches?”

“Okay, the bad news is that she isn’t there anymore.” Daithi clenched his fists, but Charlie continued, “The good news is that Winnie asked about a tourist spot about fifteen minutes from here. If we go now, we might catch them.”

By the time we approached the car, Clawdia’s breathing had settled into a calmer rhythm, but her shuddering and her temperature had only increased. “Zaide. Put me down please. I feel sick.”

I did as I was bid and placed her on the ground in time for her to moan, bend over, and lose the contents of her stomach. I gathered the strands of hair that had escaped her braid and rubbed her back, whispering soft nothings. My heart continued to ache as she moaned and cried.

When she was done, Charlie tipped a bottle of water over our shoes, washing away the sick, before we crawled into the backseats. I wrapped my arms around her, and she leaned into me, still shaking and exhausted, with a stream of tears and snot pouring from her.

I will not allow her to be taken from me again, I vowed.

CHAPTER18

CLAWDIA

Tissues sat uselessly in my hands until Zaide opened them and carefully wiped my face, drying the tears. He pressed a kiss to my forehead and hugged me tightly, but shame pierced my heart.
