He shook his head. “She might be a cat again.”

“You think it’s going to be that easy? Witches need spells. Words. Not just intention like Daithi. They aren’t going to have a spell to help her.”

“Oh.”

“What does that mean?”

He sighed. “I don’t know. I am glad she will be human, but I’m also sad she will not be getting what she wants, what she needs.”

“She needs you, too. She just doesn’t know it yet.” My mouth said the words he needed to hear, but my mind didn’t want to admit it.

He nodded. “Yes, our bond is not complete. It’s why she is so conflicted.”

“How do you complete the bond?” I asked curiously. I should have known better, because he blushed, and I put my hands up in surrender. “Okay, yep, I get it. I don’t want to know.”

He chuckled and then sighed. “Until then, her bond with her witch will be most prevalent and she will long to be with her, as they were.”

I hummed thoughtfully. “Zaide, you said Clawdia was the other half of your soul, right? That means, before her past life as a human, she must have been a whole titan with your other half.”

He nodded. “That’s correct.”

“Well, if I’d been stripped of power, then made so powerless in my human life that I killed myself, I’d probably prefer the life that gave me a part of that power back.”

“You are right, Charlie. She feels the echoes of her past, and her bond with the witch has reconnected her with magic. It is understandable, her preference.” His purple eyes lit up with understanding. But it didn’t help us solve any more mysteries.

We sat in companionable silence as we munched more snacks.

“So, you kicked arse today. I have to say, although you’re built for it, I didn’t see that coming.”

He looked at me sharply. “You do not think I am capable of or desire to protect my soul pair?”

I choked on a Revel. “No. God, no. You’re more than capable, that’s clear. You … were a fighter?”

He nodded but said nothing else about his time as a slave. It probably didn’t bring up good memories, and I felt like a worm for mentioning it. He sighed and told me earnestly. “I’m sorry if I alarmed you.”

I gave a startled laugh. “It’s okay. I was actually feeling a bit constipated from the traveling, but you’ve sorted me right out.” I laughed again; however, my humor was wasted on my audience.

“Constipated?”

“The opposite of diarrhea.”

“You cannot shit?” I laughed at the horror on his face. “Charlie, you said there weren’t curses, but I don’t believe you. That is a curse.” He tilted his head back to stare at the ceiling. A small clunk sounded as the charm on the end of his braid hit the floor. “We are cursed.”

And thinking about all the bad things that had happened, I agreed with him.

We fell asleep there, our heads tilted back, our snores making a symphony, our legs stretched out on the coffee table in front of the sofa. It’s also where we woke up when Daithi shouted, “I know where she is!”

We jolted to awareness and turned to see him sitting up and rubbing a sore shoulder. I didn’t have to look at Zaide to see his smugness.

“Who?” I asked. “Clawdia?”

He nodded. “And the witches.”

“Okay, where?”

Daithi closed his eyes. “It’s a hotel near to the coffeehouse we visited today. It’s called Best Western Plaza Hotel.”
