But now I was left with a horrible conflict inside me. Did I stop my witch from completing her sworn mission, which would lead to both our deaths? Or did I betray the others by allowing my witch to hunt them down? Neither option sat well with me, but I had to do something.

When I heard the soft breath of Winnie next to me sleeping, I took my chance. Slowly, I rolled off the bed and then moved as quietly as a hunting cat to the door of the hotel room. I peeked outside for any sign of Mary or Debbie and then ran to reach the stairs before anyone knew I was gone.

CHAPTER21

CLAWDIA

Creeping from the hotel, I kept close to the building, my eyes scanning the area for anyone who might stop me. The rising sun cast the car park in shadows, which made me more paranoid.

I didn’t know how I would get back. I scanned the car park, looking for a taxi or someone who could help, hoping I could get them to take me back to the apartment and get Charlie to pay when I arrived. I decided to walk the way we drove until someone passed me.

Suddenly, someone pulled me back into the shadows of the building, one hand against my mouth and the other wrapped around my waist.

Not again!

I tried to scream and wiggle away.

The man shushed me. “Clawdia, stop.”

Charlie!I sagged in his arms.Thank God.

Hidden behind a large green bin, he set me down and turned me to face him. He ran his hands up and down my arms. “Are you okay?”

I slapped his chest. “Someone already kidnapped me yesterday. I didn’t need to relive that. Why did you think that was a good idea?” I hissed.

He looked surprised and rubbed his chest. “First, ow, Clawdia. And second, I’m trying to rescue you. This is the thanks I get?”

“Rescue me? No. I’m rescuing myself,” I scoffed and crossed my arms.

“What?” His handsome face turned puzzled.

“I’ve just run away. I’m coming back with you,” I informed him.

It was his turn to scoff. “Well, of course you are. Because I’m rescuing you.”

I rolled my eyes. “You’re being pedantic.”

“Big word. Was that on your ‘Word of the Day’ calendar today?”

The playfulness fell out of my voice as I thought about everything that had happened. “I didn’t have anything that happened today on my calendar.”

He sighed, matching my seriousness, and took my hand. “Come on, let’s get you back to the others. Zaide has been a wreck. He almost killed Daithi for what he did to you.”

Awww, that cute golden giant!

I smiled. “He is very protective of me.”

“That’s an understatement.”

Getting into the car, I clicked my seat belt in place and then we were off.

“So, what happened? You’re still a human, I notice.”

I glared at the side of his head, which was focused on the road. “Yes, I’m sorry to disappoint you, Charlie. Clawdicat might never come back.” He threw me a quick glance, an eyebrow raised.

There was a pregnant pause before he shook his head. “I want to know why you think that, but first, I want to apologize. I shouldn’t have said what I did about the Clawdicat and Clawdia debacle. I hurt you when you were already feeling like shit, and that’s not okay.”

I sighed and sagged into the car seat. “Charlie, you don’t have to apologize. I understand. I can’t imagine how strange it must be for you.”
