He sighed deeply before turning suddenly and smashing his fist into the nearest box. Both Mary and I flinched.

“Disloyal bastards,” he roared. “All the glory and power I bestowed upon that line for this betrayal.” He whirled to point at Mary. “They will suffer for this. Most greatly,” he growled.

She nodded and knotted her hands behind her back. From this angle, I could see them tremble. “I will help you.”

Letting out a deep and long breath, he brushed his clothes, and when everything was back in place, he said evenly, “I am disappointed that my offspring and descendants have deserted me and our plan.”

“I have not, my lord. My immediate family has not. We’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to help you rise again.”

“And this is it?”

“Many people, human and supernatural, are going missing, the portals created to the human realm are more frequent, and the witches were frightened. We persuaded them that this was the best option to keep everyone safe while we found a better solution.”

He nodded thoughtfully. “I will take the magic of your enemies, for they tried to sabotage your plan and my rising, and therefore, your revenge will be my revenge. But this world is new, and I need to catch up on how to navigate it before we begin executing the plan.”

“Here.” She presented him the book that she had been clinging to. “It’s the family history since you’ve been away. You can read while I’m gone to find a supernatural, and I can answer any other questions you have when I come back.”

He took the book and started flipping through it. “Yes. Bring me back something powerful. I’m starved.”

“Yes, of course. I’ll try to lure—”

“I don't care how you do it.” He sneered and waved a dismissive hand. “I’m not impressed with your tactics. Just get it done.”

Mary walked away, her quick footsteps echoing across the warehouse. I trembled, knowing she was going to try and find an innocent person for this monster to hurt. An innocent person who could be someone I care about, who I left asleep, in an unguarded apartment.

Glancing at Fafnir, who had made himself comfortable on the floor and was paging through his book, I debated my next move.

I need to warn the others, but moving from this spot could mean I get caught.I’d also be leaving someone to walk into their doom and suffer at his hands. But what can I do to prevent that outcome without endangering myself?

Focusing inward on my bonds, I saw one dim bond, which I assumed meant Charlie was still asleep, and one bright purple bond. Pinpointing the soul pair bond that I shared with Zaide and hesitantly asked, “Zaide?”

His response was almost immediate. “Little Cat? Are you all right? Where are you?”

“I’m fine. I’m in a warehouse, I don’t know where exactly, but I’ve found the dragon. Mary is working with him. He wants magic. She’s going to come after all of you. Do you know where Daithi and Savida are?”

He was silent for a long moment. “Are you in danger?”I hesitated. “I am coming to you.”

A small smile appeared on my face at his concern and love. But panic made the smile fall from my face like a stone as I realized what he said.

“No! Zaide, you can’t come here. You might die.”

“I’ll die if you die, and you are in danger. Together, we can save each other."

I shook my head. “Please, just don’t let anything happen to Daithi or Savida or Alcor or Charlie. If Mary can’t get her hands on them, I’ll be safer.”

“I don’t like this, Little Cat. We shouldn’t be apart. Everything inside me is telling me to find you.”

“I know. I can’t wait to be back home. I have so much to tell you and …”I got choked up thinking about all I had learned and all the emotions that knowledge had brought with it.

“And?”Zaide questioned.

“And I could really do with a hug.”

“Oh, my love.I felt how my words affected him.” How he yearned to have me in his arms right that second and how he restrained himself … because he trusted me and respected me.

Was there anyone more perfect than this man?

“I am here in your mind when you need me, Little Cat, even if I can’t be with you physically. I will protect everyone from Mary and ensure she can’t use them to feed the dragon. But Little Cat, if he wants magic and finds it under his nose, then you will be gone before any of us can save you. Please, come home as soon as you find an opportunity.”
