"Join you?" I asked slowly.

He smiled again. "I will show you how to take your power, and you will join me in draining these gifts. We will both need our strength to continue our plan."

I looked past him to see that Clawdia was missing. Now I just needed to get Fafnir away from Zaide, and we could all go home. I continued the ruse, "I'd be honored, my lord."

"Excellent." His eyes lit up with genuine pleasure, which immediately left when he turned to see Clawdia missing. "Where is she?"

"I don't know, my lord. She was there a moment ago. Do you want me to look for her?"

He growled and flicked his hair out of his face, frustration etched into his pose. "I've had enough of being made a fool today."

Fafnir stormed over to the witch with the red hair and pulled her into a sitting position by her neck. I gasped and stepped forward automatically to stop him before I stopped myself.

He's too powerful to go up against alone. And I can't risk Clawdia or Zaide.

I gritted my teeth at the knowledge that I was allowing someone to die so we could live. I hated it. But the whole situation was fucked, and I had to look out for my family.

Kneeling, I tapped Zaide and whispered, "Time to go." His eyes flashed open. The purple glowed with pain and anger, but he quickly sat up without attracting the attention of Fafnir.

Fafnir was busy with the witch, his eyes clouded with an almost orgasmic look on his face as he drained her. I saw the glow in his hand, felt the power being pulled from her, and something inside me craved to join him.

A greedy voice called out for more power deep inside me. And I knew that my birth mother wasn't wrong. Maybe I wasn't a dragon yet. But if I stayed with my ancestor much longer, I would be. And I had no plans to sign up for wings.

Zaide's hand on my arm brought me back from the hypnotic sight, and his face was sympathetic. "We need to find Clawdia," he whispered.

CHAPTER30

CLAWDIA

Ishivered as I peeked around the desk to see Fafnir gripping the witch and draining her. My fingernails dug into my palms as I squashed the urge to jump out. I had already tried to save her today and ended up tortured, drained, naked, and revealing myself to the man who had previously pushed me to suicide.

Closing my eyes, tears formed under the surface of my lids, and a sob welled in the back of my throat. I bit my tongue and forced back my cry. It wasn't the time to freak out, we still weren't safe. I tried to focus, breathing deeply to prevent fear from completely taking over. My whole body ached as though I'd been beaten, although my skin didn't show a single mark, and my legs were shaking at the thought of movement.

Charlie's voice came to mind, “Where are you?”

I'd clearly done a better job at hiding than I'd thought. “I'm behind the desk.”

“Can you run?”

“I can try.”

“Try for me, baby, because he's busy, and we aren't going to get another chance to escape.”

My heart melted at the term of endearment, giving me a shot of energy strong enough to crawl around the desk. Just as Fafnir's head lifted, the haze in his eyes from the pleasure he experienced taking power cleared, and his gaze met mine. I froze, my blood ran cold, and a slow smile appeared on his face.

"Run!" Charlie's voice broke through my panic and forced my body to move again.

I sprang to my feet and raced toward Charlie and Zaide, who were backing away into the aisle behind them. With my hair streaming behind me, waving like a flag, my heart pounding loudly in my ears, and my bare feet slapping against the floor, I ignored the pain and Fafnir's widening eyes as he realized what was happening.

"No!" he screamed. “Descendant, your betrayal is noted, and your death is marked."

I jumped into Charlie's open arms, shaking like a leaf, and he wrapped me tightly against him before turning and running. Zaide offered me a small smile as he followed behind, lagging due to his injuries.

“Are you hurt?”I asked him.

“I'll be fine when we get out of here, Little Cat.”

Fafnir's roar of rage turned from human to dragon as he exploded into his mythical form. His huge body knocked over the desk as he expanded in size, scales rippling across his body, his eyes narrowing, and his snout steaming.
