I laughed. “No. Of course not. Where are they? The soul pair?”

Riseir waved a hand. “You will meet them soon. You will train them.”

“Will I?”

I hated training people. That’s why Theris was the face of the army. I was powerful and had many of the powers of old thanks to my fathers, but I was feared. Not respected. And that made training more difficult. My instinct was to fight and win, not to fight and practice. When my opponents cowered, it made it all the more difficult to restrain myself.

“Yes. You are skilled, as you should be as the son of gods,” Hedri said proudly.

But I knew he was brushing over the truth. "I am.” I crossed my legs, relaxing into my seat. “But I don’t know why I would do that. You are not my gods. You are not my kings. You are not my fathers. You said so yourselves. Why should I help you?"

A cold and frosted silence descended upon us.

Hedri coughed. “Tempers were heightened last time we spoke. You know we love—”

I cut him off with a slash of my hand as I spoke. “I don’t want excuses. You want me to train this titan and his soul pair enough to call me here. Your disowned son. I want to know why.” I was furious that they thought they could demand my compliance. Despite my curiosity at the pair, I no longer listened to the instructions of my fathers.

“They are the saviors of our people.”

I let my breath out slowly in an attempt to calm myself. "What?"

My fathers exchanged a look before, uncharacteristically, Charos continued with compliments. "You are skilled in the powers of old and have a thread power of blood. You are a great fighter. There's no better—"

I shook my head once and raised a hand to stop him, my blood boiling. “No. I know I am skilled, but flattery won’t make me any more pliant. I am the savior of the titans.”

“Your mother filled your head with rubbish—”

“My mother had the sight.”

“Your mother is not here to testify your truth,” Riseir added.

Hedri spoke softly, “Baelen, he is a titan.”

Despite the walls I had built over years to cut off my emotions—a bloodthirsty killer and leader of a titan army didn’t have emotions—I cried. I still yearned for my fathers’ love and approval, despite being a disowned half-breed. And that made me furious.

“I am titan! I am the savior,” I roared, my fangs descending and my vision turning to red lines.

“Misguided fool.” Charos rolled his eyes. “He has Riseir’s arrogance.”

“If he didn’t have your strength, Charos, he wouldn’t be so arrogant,” Riseir replied in kind.

“He has the desire to serve. Does that not show a love for his fathers and the titan people?” Hedri asked, grinning like a fool.

“He is nothing like you, Hedri,” both Charos and Riseir said simultaneously.

“Be silent!" I shouted, my patience with their banter wearing thin. "You want me to train another to be the savior of the titans when I am already that. This meeting is redundant.”

“How are you already such? You do nothing for us.” Charos sneered.

I couldn’t tell them what I had been doing. Mother told me to keep it from them. So, all I could say was, “There are more titans in the realms than just you three. I won’t be training an approved savior for you.”

Although I would be paying Zaide a visit. Perhaps he could join my army with his soul pair. I could monitor their gifts more closely. But my fathers couldn’t know of my interest in them, so I rose slowly from my chair and turned to leave.

“I’ll be spending the night but going home in the morning when I’ve recovered. If you want your savior trained, I suggest you do it yourselves.”

The throne squeaked as Riseir stood and called after me. “You know we can’t. Interfering is not allowed.”

“You interfered enough to save his soul pair,” I replied and slowed my walk.
