“Ah, um, yes, hello,” I stuttered.

“Welcome to Tartarus.” But his crossed arms and blank expression didn’t suggest that I was welcome.

Tartarus? Zaide’s homeland?

“Who are you?” I asked. “How did I get here?”

I rubbed my forehead as my mind swam with confusion. The bright sun seemed to blind me as I took in the surroundings again, trying to understand what was happening. I crouched and covered my face.

“Baelen. My fathers sent me.”

How do you have more than one father?

"Your fathers …" I gazed up at him, trying to place how I knew him or his fathers. His dark features were illuminated by a ring of light from the sun behind him like a halo, and I fell on my backside as I stared up at him in awe.

“What are you doing?”

I rubbed my hands across the prickly green grass. “This is all very strange,” I replied. I felt slightly drunk, untouchable.

I felt like I was Clawdia the cat.

How does the grass feel so real when I feel so odd?

“That’s because this is a dream. I have walked into your dream to talk to you. You should feel more settled soon as your mind adjusts to the changes.”

The confirmation of this being a dream had me sighing my relief, and I fought to focus.

Baelen bent toward me. His shoulder-length hair fell around his face, and I gasped. How can someone be so handsome? He held out his hand, and I automatically reached for it. While his hand wasn’t as large as Zaide's, it still swallowed mine and left me tingling as he pulled me to my feet. With his touch came a clearer mind.

"You’re the son of the titan gods?” I guessed as I looked at him again, comparing him to Zaide. He was dark everywhere that Zaide was light, but I didn't know enough about titans to question his coloring.

Perhaps, like humans, titans come in all shades and sizes.

“I am.” He didn't sound pleased about it.

In the bright sunlight, his red eyes seemed to swirl like paint mixing; various shades of red and pink and purple danced together hypnotically. And although they were strange and would have been scary in any other scenario, I wasn't afraid. I thought they were fascinating.

Does his soul pair have a matching pair of red eyes like how Zaide and I had matching eyes?

My stomach sank at the thought, but I didn't understand why.

I let go of his hand and moved back, trying to distance myself from my strange feelings. “You’re going to train us?”

He frowned at me. “I am going to try.”

"Right now?" I wasn't ready to learn anything with my head feeling so confused. Then I gasped as memories came back to me.

We’re trapped by the witches. We went to sleep. Can a dream teach us how to use our powers? Maybe he could help us escape?

With so many thoughts bubbling around in my head, I didn't have time to order them before a question popped out. "Where are Zaide and Charlie? They need to learn how to use their powers too."

He tilted his head. “We aren't training now.”

“Oh." I frowned. "Why not? Are we waiting for Zaide and Charlie?”

"They are the men you are jailed with?"

My frown deepened. “How do you know we are jailed?”
