Zaide's eyes were wild. "Something is wrong."

"Yeah, we are being hunted by witches."

Zaide turned in a slow circle, he was breathing heavily but I didn't know if that was from the running or something else. "No. There are lines. Lines everywhere."

I straightened, concern washing away my urgency, and glanced at Charlie to see he was looking at me the same way, thinking the same thing. Zaide had been unwell in the cave. Had he gotten worse?

"What does that mean? What lines?" I asked.

"I can't describe it …"

Charlie muttered to me, "We don't have time for this. We have to keep going."

I nodded and took Zaide’s hand drawing his attention to me. “Can you ignore them?”

He blinked a few times but didn’t focus on me. “I think so.”

“Let's keep going.” I grasped Charlie’s hand and started jogging again.

And ran straight into a forcefield.

CHAPTER8

CLAWDIA

Amagical cage burst to life around us, throwing us to the ground while witches emerged from behind the trees with cruel grins on their smug faces.

"No!" I cried.

“Baelen!”I screamed in my head. “Baelen, I need you. Please. Help us.”

"You thought you could escape. It was a valiant effort but not good enough. You've only made us move our deadline up, and now you’re out of time." Debs laughed. "Bring the cage to the clearing. Let’s do this."

"We were so close," I whimpered as we floated off the ground and hovered behind the witches as they chattered excitedly on the way to sacrifice us.

I huddled between Zaide and Charlie, hugging myself, suddenly cold with dread.

Zaide wrapped his arms around me and nuzzled my head. "Don't give up just yet, Little Cat. We can still win this."

"How?"

"They will lower their guard when they attempt the ceremony, and we will take advantage. Keep being hopeful. We will win the day."

“You can just do what you did earlier.” Charlie smiled encouragingly.

Tears welled in my eyes. “I can’t.”

“Why not?” His eyes darkened.

I swallowed. “It wasn’t me who did it.”

“Who the fuck was it then, because there were only us three in that cave?”

“Charlie,” Zadie warned, clearly not liking Charlie’s tone, but he also stared at me in confusion.

Charlie continued unperturbed, “I saw you raise your hand and ‘come hither’ that witch into the bars.”

Zaide nodded. “I agree. You did do that. We know nothing of our powers yet, and you were under a lot of stress. Perhaps—”
