But even without knowing her for long, I knew she would. Her guilt at bringing it back to life would force her into action.

“The human realm is full of the descendants of full-blooded otherworlders. The descendants of beings from Akar, Álfheimr, Mestaclocan, Drakor, Kur, and Tartarus. They are all going to be targets, food, for this being. I will come to the human realm and see—”

Clawdia interrupted with a shake of her head. “Portaling to my realm is closed now. That's why the witches wanted to raise him. His existence stops them. I don’t know how.”

My blood went cold. “So, the dragon is contained in a place I cannot get to with a titan soul pair and witches to devour?”

She grimaced as she added, “We also have two demons and a faei in our party.”

“Darkness protect me,” I covered my face and took a breath. “You and your titan are important to my mission. You are both full of power. We can’t afford to lose you. Nor can we afford this dragon to gain your power. The consequences could be devastating for all the realms. Promise me that you will do all you can to stay hidden from the dragon.”

“I promise,” she whispered and I sighed.

“In the meantime,” I continued, “we will meet in these dreams, and I will train you so if you are in any danger, you will be able to better protect yourself.”

“Just me?” She tilted her head, blond locks poured over her shoulder and down her arm. I itched to touch the silken lengths. “You can’t bring Zaide into the dreams too?”

I hesitated. “It might be easier for his learning to be taught by you.”

She frowned. “But the gods told him you’d be teaching him, not me. He’s going to feel rejected if you won’t even meet him.”

I tipped my head back to stare at the sky. “I don’t know what his reception of me might be.” She looked puzzled, and I sighed. “I am part akari. I have the titan thread power from my fathers and akari gifts thanks to my mother. Akari are the opposite of titans. Titans are golden and flourish in the light. Akari are dark, and we need blood to survive. That scares a lot of otherworlders.

Did you know that the titans procreate through blood since the separation of their souls? There was a pool called the life pool, and a couple mixes their blood inside it. The female drinks the potion, and months later, new life is born. Titans see blood as sacred. And so, I am often feared on sight.”

Clawdia paused for a moment. “You think he would fear you? And wouldn’t want to be taught by you?” I nodded. She shook her head. "He isn’t so prejudiced. You’ll see."

I gave her a wan smile. "You are more optimistic than I, Sunlight."

“At least meet him. We—” Clawdia’s eyes bugged as she spotted something behind me and screamed. I whirled around to see a shadow darting toward us, a long black weapon in its hand.

A shadow? Invading my dream? This should be impossible.

I materialized a sword and placed Clawdia close to my back. She’d bitten down on her lip to stop the screams from escaping. Her fingers shook as she held on to the top of my trousers.

“Don’t let go of me,” I told her and faced our attacker.

The shadow threw itself at me, and the strike against my sword vibrated through my entire body, but I had been trained by my parents and uncle, who were some of the greatest weapons masters in the realms. Clawdia’s grasp on my trousers disappeared as I fought to protect us but kept her close behind me.

He advanced again, and I parried as we circled each other.

"Who are you?" I growled. "What are you doing here? How did you get here?"

"You have a lot to learn," the shadow responded. But not out loud. In my head. The voice was definitely male, but it wasn't one I recognized.

How did they know how and where to invade my dream?

My thoughts were full of questions as we lunged, struck, and attacked each other again and again. And despite enjoying the opportunity to test my skills, I was getting bored.

This is my dream, and I could kill this shadow in an instant with my titan powers, but I need answers.

"What do you want?" I growled.

“Revenge.”

For what?

I couldn’t recall ever being in contact with the people of the shadow realm or what I could have done to offend them.
