He didn't reply, which was answer enough.

I've been nothing but an experiment to him.

I closed my eyes and held my breath as he began to explain himself, "The fall of the titans has always fascinated me. I had dreams of it when I was a child. They had such power, I wanted to see them return to their former glory."

“So you rescued him and took him around the realms looking for his family, but really to find his soul pair. You lied to him about what soul pairs even were so he would be lovesick enough to jump into a relationship with her, regardless of the pain it might have caused him if things had gone wrong. And to top it all off, you abandon the whole experiment, leaving us all for dead to ensure your soul mate never looks at a witch again!” Charlie roared. “Did I hear that right?”

I stared at the human I had only known a few short weeks, his face red and his body trembling with anger. He had been through a great ordeal but had fought hard for strangers. And now I saw how he would fight even harder for his friends. Despite the betrayal throbbing in my heart, there was a glimmer of love for my human friend, which warmed my cold body.

"Zaide … Charlie …" Savida’s eyes pleaded, but he couldn’t say anything more.

I shook my head, still in disbelief. "You knew all this? His goals?"

I didn't want to believe that he could be so friendly to my face knowing I was just a pawn. A slave to his lover’s curiosity. But when Savida didn’t deny it, I scoffed.

And I thought that they were my saviors.

"Zaide, we wanted to help you," he began, not responding to my question. I narrowed my eyes. "You met Clawdia. You have love. You rescued yourselves. It all worked out for the best in the end."

"You lied, deceived me, used me, and then abandoned me. I thought we were friends. That you saved me. No matter the outcome, your intentions were self-serving, selfish, and cruel. When you can leave to go back to Álfheimr, I won’t be going with you, and I don’t want to see you again."

“Zaide, please—” Savida had a tear running down his face, and I wavered for a moment. I hated hurting him. But the pain in my heart from learning their true reason for saving me was too much to ignore.

“Get the fuck out of here. I can’t stand the sight of you both,” Charlie snarled.

"You want us to leave?" Daithi asked, shocked.

“Actions have consequences, Daithi. You’ve been a knob since the moment Savida’s fire was taken, and after all we’ve done to help you, you haven’t got a shred of compassion for us or any respect for Zaide. Fuck off somewhere else. You aren’t welcome here anymore.”

Charlie’s phone drew my attention from Daithi and Savida’s shocked and upset faces as it rang and vibrated on the side table. Already in a foul mood, Charlie snarled at the screen and answered, “Simon? What the fuck do you want?”

CHAPTER15

CHARLIE

It wasn’t Simon.

The male voice on the phone responded with a calm, “Is this Charles Bennet?”

Surprised, I turned away from the group to stare out of the window. “It is. You aren’t Simon. Is he dead?”

Maybe the dragon got him.

“No, I've been given his phone to make this call.” Amusement colored his voice.

I sighed and rubbed my head, a headache brewing behind my eyes. “Disappointing,” I muttered. “And you are?”

“Forgive me. My name is Joseph Northrop, and I’m the faei representative for the Supernatural Council.”

“The what?”

There’s a Supernatural Council?

He continued, “I have been informed that the reason there is a dragon circling the skies is due to an incident with your familiar and her … titan soul pair. Is this correct?”

Sudden rage hit me like a shot. I shouted, “What a bunch of fucking—Listen, Joe. If the whispering in your ear is coming from a witch, then you’re being lied to. Our power might have raised the dragon and their protector, but it’s not because we wanted to.”

“Are you not a witch yourself?”
