“Why bother with the ridiculous lies? That’s the real question,” Zaide said, crossing his arms.

“And a good one.” Marianne turned to Debs. “You may speak and answer the question.”

“Honestly,” Samuel added.

Debs gasped as though she’d just come up from water, and I realized she was under some kind of silent spell. But Marianne is a vampire … Is it a compulsion thing? Like in the films?

Her lip trembled as she reluctantly said, “Mary said you’d destroy the protector if you saw him. We needed you to be distracted looking for the truth instead of him.”

Everyone spoke at the same time.

“Truth,” Samuel announced.

“Mary?” Clawdia gasped.

I asked, “The protector is missing?”

“How does this Mary know our actions before we do?” Joseph glared and crossed his arms. “Are you not the witch representative? Is it not your job to dictate actions? Why are you listening to this witch?”

Marianne asked, "Where is she? She will also need to be punished for killing one of her own."

I felt the sadness from Clawdia as she was reminded that Winnie was no longer with us because of her evil girlfriend.

Debs swallowed thickly. "She didn't return to us for the second ceremony, so I'm not sure."

"Truth," Samuel stated again.

Joseph shook his head. “Yet you went along with her plan to lie to the council?”

“She has helped me plan the event and introduced me to the document detailing how and when to raise the protector.”

Mary influenced Debs to do this? Why?

“Go on. What did the document say about how and when to raise the protector?” Marianne asked.

“When the realm is under attack, witches are to unearth the demon fire that has been collected over centuries and use it to raise the protector,” Debs hurried to explain.

“It didn’t mention he was buried with a dragon?” Samuel asked.

Debs bowed her head again. “No.”

Something wasn’t adding up. She’s not a stupid woman, yet her actions were desperate and reaching. Why would she listen to Mary?

Alex, who’d been so still and silent I forgot he was in the room, leaned forward in his seat, resting his head on his interlocked fingers. It gave mafia vibes as he glowered at Debs. "I'm interested in how you have managed to call my ancestors to the human realm and treat them as power supplies."

She swallowed audibly, and her voice wavered as she replied, “In the document, there was a name for a demon, who, when called, handed me a list of other names. We summoned demons from the list and took their fire.”

“I knew it!” Alcor shouted and slapped the table. “A leader is betraying us.” His fists clenched, and he closed his eyes.

Poor bastard.I patted his shoulder, and when he relaxed and opened his eyes, he nodded his thanks. I mentally addedFind out who this mystery man is so Alcor can kill him when he gets hometo the to-do list.

"You didn't consider grabbing some of my people?" Alex asked with a cold, emotionless grin. Deb hesitated and coughed awkwardly. "Be honest,” Alex prodded. “We will know if you try to lie."

Deb bowed her head. "It crossed my mind. But many demonkin’s blood and fire is so watered down it wouldn't have worked."

“You disgust me,” he sneered, and she flinched.

Marianne asked softly. “Deborah, why didn’t you bring this document to the council?”
