Marianne turned her attention to the person lingering in the doorway. “Well? What’s the status report, Laurence?”

Laurence shifted his weight and crossed his arms as he glared at Deborah. “He was hidden in a wardrobe in one of the witch’s rooms. He’s … not right.”

“What does that mean?” Samuel drawled in that rhythmic accent of his.

“He’s not speaking or moving. He’s barely breathing,” Laurence explained.

“Look at that.” Charlie laughed as he picked up another Jammy Dodger. “You’ve done all this for nothing, and your protector is just going to die again anyway.”

“Stop eating those,”I told him through our bond and moved the packet away from him. I could tell he’d forgotten we could talk like that because his eyes widened.

He took an exaggerated bite.“Make me.”

“Charlie,”I warned.

“Why? I’d rock a dad bod.”He drew the packet back toward him.

I picked them up and passed them to Zaide.“You’ve almost eaten the entire packet.”

“I gave you one. I can share.”He gave me a devilish grin and leaned close. He licked his lips, and I followed the movement, hypnotized and distracted. I didn’t notice his mischievous brown eyes until he quickly swiped the packet from behind me and took another biscuit, which he smugly ate.

Alcor’s serious voice interrupted. “You must help him. Heal him. He cannot die.”

“Yes. Listen to the demon. Help the protector. Don’t harm him,” Deborah urged like a snake charmer at the circus.

Charlie side-eyed the witch before he asked Alcor, “Why can’t he die? She tried to kill you to raise him. You don’t think that it's just desserts?”

Alcor pinned us all with his black-eyed stare. “Because this dragon steals magic, and if the protector dies, allowing the portals to reopen, it will be able to travel in search of more powerful prey. The realms would be in danger.”

Silence followed. He was right. The dragon needed to be stopped before the protector could be laid to rest.

“That’s a very good point,” Joseph said and pulled out his phone. “We will call a healer immediately.”

I swallowed nervously before I said, "We try to heal the protector. I was a nurse in my previous life, and Zaide and I have our titan gift …"

I looked at my soul pair, aware I’d just volunteered him for something without his input, but he beamed proudly down at me, kissed my forehead, and squeezed my knee. I took that to be assent.

Joseph lowered his phone. “That would be much appreciated. Thank you.”

“Shall I go and get him?” Laurence offered.

I shook my head. “You probably shouldn’t move him if he’s so fragile.”

“The poor bastard’s already been shoved in a wardrobe. Don’t drag him into this corporate hellhole,” Charlie added.

“We’ll make him comfortable in a bed.”

He’ll probably need a wash too so I can properly assess him.I thought to myself, mentally listing how to help as I stood up from the table.

“Deborah, I think you and I should also join them,” Marianne said in a deceptively even tone.

I didn’t turn to see what Deborah had to say. I strode toward the door, Zaide and Charlie close behind me, and we followed Laurence out of the meeting room and up the stairs.

With the click of a keycard unlocking the door, we stepped into a darkened room, revealing a witch sitting on the bed, twiddling her thumbs.

Laurence barked, “Out.”

She jumped up and protested, “But this is my room!”
