"There is no harm in trying again another time."

He squeezed me tight to him, and I nuzzled into his warmth and listened to the sound of his steady heartbeat.

After a moment of reflection, I said, "He felt like a drain."

"What do you mean?"

"He felt as though our magic didn't affect him, like it didn't really help because the magic is going somewhere else in his body."

We sat in silence for a moment as he thought about that. "It did feel like it wasn't really going into the threads. How do we fix it? He might get worse if we can't heal him."

"I know you probably don't want to hear this, but we'll have to ask Baelen for help." He frowned, and I reached out to smooth his wrinkled forehead with my thumb. "Is it too soon to ask how you feel about this morning?"

A hundred emotions crossed over his face and echoed through our bond. "I don't know anymore."

I waited, wanting to give him space to talk.

"Daithi told me today that our bond is not one of love. It only needed to be consummated so we could get access to our powers, but our souls are broken from being split. He saved me to help me find my soul pair to satisfy his curiosity about titans."

“What?” I gasped. I thought he was going to delve into the reason he hated akari.

I missed a lot when I was doing dishes with Alcor. Although, this explains the glares and tension.

I huffed frustratedly. “Firstly, Daithi saving you for the purpose of research is understandably hard to hear, and I’m so sorry. But I’m still glad he did, or we wouldn’t be here right now.” I cupped his cheek and continued, "And how can he know what our bond should or shouldn't be when it's the first of its kind? Maybe for another titan soul pair, it wouldn't manifest as ours has, but that doesn't stop the reality of our bond, of our attraction, our love." I was whispering by the end, my face only inches from his, and staring at his lovely, familiar purple eyes that softened with each word.

He pressed a soft, slow kiss on my lips. "You are most wise, Little Cat."

"Don't let Daithi spoil what is ours. I love you."

"And I, you."

After learningour healing hadn't been successful, the council agreed to protect the protector until he was well again and continue monitoring the dragon situation. I suggested they call a doctor who could administer a drip for hydration and food, which might help the protector in the meantime. Charlie took all their numbers and said to let us know if there’s anything we can do.

Emotionally and physically drained from the day, we bundled into the car and headed for home, picking up pizza on the way. Opening the door into the apartment, all was quiet until Alcor let out an almighty yawn.

Charlie chuckled, throwing the pizzas on the table. “Alcor, if you want my room tonight, I’ll sleep on the sofa.”

“If that’s all right with you, Charlie, I’d be most grateful.” He gave a sheepish smile, and I noticed the deep circles beneath his eyes. “I didn’t sleep well last night.”

“Understandable.” I picked up a plate from the kitchen and put some slices of pizza on it before handing it to Alcor. “Eat this and get to bed.”

He took the plate with a grateful nod. “If it’s all right with you, I’ll eat in bed.”

Charlie laughed. “Crack on, mate. Not going to stop you from having a private moment with this cheesy delight.”

As Alcor wished us all goodnight and disappeared down the hall, I looked around the apartment and asked, “Where are Savida and Daithi?”

“Their door is shut.” Charlie sighed and he sank into a chair. “I don’t have the energy to have it out with them again.”

“You shouldn’t have to, my friend.” Zaide patted Charlie on the back. “It is my battle.”

Charlie grinned. “What’s yours is mine, dear.”

I rolled my eyes but said nothing, knowing better than to encourage him. Sitting down at the table, I flipped open another box and took a slice.

I moaned around the mouthful of warm bread, tomato, and stringy cheese and the sound echoed in the silence. Silence. I glanced up to see both Zaide and Charlie staring at me with heat in their eyes.
