"What do all the interconnected dimensions have in common if not pettiness?" I sighed and finished the last bottle of blood with a grimace. It tasted like ash in comparison to the delicacy found in Clawdia’s veins.

Darshaw ignored me and pacing mumbled, "Not productive either."

"What do you mean?" I asked.

“If you want your portal back, killing someone will not fix anything.”

“Revenge is very rarely steeped in logic.”

“True.”

I paused. “You think they want their portal back?”

He nodded. "If someone had the power to heal or recreate their portal, they could revisit the human realm, find their lost, and be connected to the interlinked dimensions once more."

Heal their portal? Is that possible?

I shook my head confused. "I thought knowledge of the natural portals was lost, that the Fates took it from the masses to ensure that manipulation of humans couldn't happen again. We only know because of my fathers."

"That's right.” He stroked his chin as he considered. “I don't know how, but the shadow people must have regained that knowledge or the past memory and want something."

Following his train of thought, I asked, "How would you remake a portal?"

"I'd ask your fathers." His lips quirked into a crooked grin. "But while they are weak and dying, I'd look for another source of great power and experiment." He gave me a look which told me all I needed to know.

The son of gods would be a source of great power with which to experiment.

I sighed. "You've been alive too long."

He barked a laugh. “I don’t know what you mean.”

I waved a hand. “Regardless of their desires, I don’t intend to let them get close to me again. How do I make sure they can’t attack when I’m dream walking?”

An hour later, we were in the library, scouring through books on the subject. I desperately needed something to guarantee the soul pairs' safety while we worked together in the dreamscape.

Attacks are not likely to be useful training exercise for healers.

"There is nothing here that specifies protections against the shadow people." I slammed closed another book, causing dust to blow back into my face.

Darshaw sighed. "I'm going to assume you had all the usual protections in place."

"I had my tether set to home. I shielded my mind. It shouldn't have mattered if they had a belonging of mine or not. I should have been safe."

"What if they didn't come in through you?"

I frowned. "Clawdia? How would they know I was training her? How would they know she exists?"

"There was no one in Tartarus who could tell secrets?"

"The palace is empty."

"Are you sure?"

I hesitated. "I'm never sure."

"If the soul pair are your mates, they will gain your gifts as you gain theirs. You'll need to teach them how to dream walk and how to protect themselves. Perhaps that will stop any more invaders." He grinned and waggled his brows. "Lots of time together to play teacher and students. I don't envy you at all."

His loud laugh was cut short by the book I tossed at his stomach.
