The akari lady floated over and sat gracefully into the armchair, picking up a cup and blowing on it. I followed suit but left my cup in my lap, allowing my hands to warm around the outside.

"Thank you," she said.

"For what?"

"Firstly, you cared enough to help me when you didn't know what was wrong with me. And other reasons for my thanks will become known as we get to know each other."

"Who are you?"

“My name is Nisha. I'm akari, as you noticed, and I have an interest in you.”

“Yes, you mentioned that, but I don't understand why. There's nothing interesting about me.”

She threw her head back and laughed. "Clawdia, there are many interesting things about you. You are the magic half of a titan, you are a familiar and have lived as a cat, you survived horrific abuse from someone who should have loved you, and still, you continue to thrive with each challenge thrown at you. You are destined for great things."

“Destined? You see the future?"

"Yes."

I took a sip of my tea, not knowing what to say or to make of this situation.

"You don't want to know your future?" She tilted her head, curious.

"If you tell me, then it's not mine to create."

"Ah, the illusion of choice."

My brow furrowed, my mind whirling as she casually challenged my beliefs. I was taught that God gave everyone free will so they could make choices about their lives and that good choices would lead them to Heaven. God didn't write our story. He watched and guided.

Nisha brought me out of my thoughts when she spoke. "You've known of visions before. Why hesitate to know now?"

I shrugged. "Nothing Daithi ever saw was for me. Or, if it had been about me, I wasn't told about it. I don't want to know."

"Wise." She gave me a sad smile. "It's a curse."

"Savida told Daithi it was a gift."

"Perhaps for some. I wasn't born with this power. I was cursed with it. Cursed to watch terrible things happen to souls who were innocent of any wrongdoing, who didn't deserve the punishment they received. Cursed to watch the consequences of my actions before I even made them. But I have a chance to make things right. To help a catalyst for positive change that, once started, will snowball, building up momentum so that my wrongs will be made right."

I had no clue what she was talking about, but her eyes were alight with passion, her face portraying her desperation, and her hands clenched as though clinging to her plans, holding them tight, pushing them into existence. She wasn't mad or crazed. But she needed help.

"What is the catalyst?"

"Not what. Who?" She stared at me, unflinchingly.

"Me?"

"You, your soul pair, your witch, and your soul mate. You are the start of it all. You finding each other, being together, and saving the human realm will cause a wave of change for titan souls—"

I raised a hand and interrupted her. "Stop. I don't want to know my future."

"Yes. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to get so carried away." She offered me a sheepish smile and calmed down, smoothing her skirts and picking up her tea again. "I do, however, have some information which is important for you to save your world.”

“My world? The human realm? It's in danger?”

"Clawdia, there is a magic-consuming dragon currently flying around. The humans have noticed. The hunters are recruiting. The portals are closed but could open with the inevitable death of the protector, which leaves more humans to be pilfered and the dragon to expand his hunting grounds."

"You're doing it again," I huffed.
