He gave me a look, part sardonic, part heated, and then turned to settle onto the bed with me on top, still in place inside me. Here, I expected for him to start fucking me harder, but to my surprise, he didn’t. He simply nuzzled my ear, running his teeth along the long curve until he came to the slight point. Noone had ever done that, and it felt incredibly good.

I relaxed beneath him. His body was so damn warm. His skin so hard, and yet, so comfortable. Yet, none of it compared to having him inside of me. My loneliness had subsided, subsumed in desire, and it was incredible, if only for tonight.

“Keep going?” I whispered.

“Just give me a little more time. Let me make things easier for us,” he murmured. “Dry is uncomfortable for me too. This lets me use my hands.”

Dry? Uncomfortable? I would have endured it. I had before, I’d never heard a man complain about it, but I nodded again. Whatever he wanted.

His lips found mine once more, and our kissing became desperate once more, tongues tangled, teeth clashed. One of his hands found my breasts, and he touched me, so damn softly at first that it was agony, then slowly harder. His fingers reached my nipples, pinching them, stroking them, sending heat racing to my core. I wiggled beneath him, wanting him to see that I was growing wetter, but he didn’t seem to care.

Instead, his hand traveled down my belly to the space between my legs. I jerked as he found exactly where I needed to be touched, then began to gently rub. Our kiss broke as I gasped at the incredible sensation, but he wasn’t done.

My body wanted to orgasm so badly it hurt. It felt like a hive of bees, angrily smashing around inside of me. But every time I felt myself growing close, he’d slow his touch. His mouth moved down my throat, kissing and sucking its way along. Leaving cool trails down my heated body, making me feel so hot, I was worried I’d burn right through his sheets.

He didn’t stop. He started to move slowly, in and out of me, while goosebumps erupted over my flesh, and my nipples felt uncomfortably hard. Heat was pouring through me. The friction of his thumb rubbing me in just the right place, and his enormous cock thrusting in and out.

Fuck. He was right, this was better. But too good. More than I could take.

When I was about to curse him out and demand he fuck me properly, he suddenly increased his movements and all thought went out the window. I met his thrusts with each of my own, and we were both groaning. Crying out with need. Moving closer and closer to completion until I came.

Stars danced in my vision. Every muscle in my body tightened, and it was like my soul sighed. My whole damn soul. How long had it been since I felt this good? Too long, that was for sure. When he came inside of me, I could feel the heat of him burning through me, and, hell, it felt good. Knowing that we’d come together. Knowing that this was good for him too.

Except, as we came down from our orgasms, he only held me tighter. His cock still firmly inside of me. His desire still hard and evident. When his thumb began to work me once more, I surrendered to him. To us.

He was as hungry as I was, and neither of us wanted rest as much as touch.

ALYS

Dreams of cold and hunger pursued me when we finally stopped, exhausted. Something hunting, seeking… a shriek that echoed through the dark forest of my dreams startled me awake. In the predawn light, Walker lay on his side, gazing down at me. Blinking sleep from my eyes, I smiled at him. He’d earned it.

I hoped to see him around the office,a lot.

When I got up to dress, his eyes lingered on me, but he didn’t break the fragile quiet as the dawn light strengthened. His hand did snag mine when I went to leave, and he pressed a kiss to my wrist before letting me go. For one brief moment, I hesitated, desperately wanting to crawl back into bed with him, to replay the pleasures of the night before, but I knew I couldn’t. Not only was there work to be done, but whatever happened between us was over.

The spirit and the people here needed help, and their need tightened the gea on me. It wasn’t always this intrusive, but the priorities of my day were set. And they didn’t include staying in bed, however much I might want to.

At least for today.

I headed downstairs, knowing this was the best time for me to seek out the river spirit. Starting early would give me plenty of time to try to find it before night fell once more. Intuition told me I wanted to be back by nightfall, and I rarely ignored it. Stange, though, it came without a feeling of threat.

Fortunately, the proprietor of the inn was already up when I came down the stairs. He looked tired, but not irritated, as I approached him.

“Do you have any old clothing I could use?” I asked. Because whatever clothes I used that day would no doubt be ruined.

And from the look on his face, he knew exactly what I needed. “My older son has something that could work,” he told me, then disappeared through the back for a few minutes before returning with a pile of clothes and some waders.

He must have been reading my mind, because the boots were perfect for what I needed to do. I could put them on over the borrowed clothes to protect myself from the disgusting river water. Their purpose was to reach up past my waist and secure at my shoulders, that way I could wade through the water and stay dry. At least, as dry as possible. I’d seen fishermen wear boots like them.

I changed into the borrowed clothes, which, luckily for me, fit. I left, carrying the waders and my normal outfit tucked under an arm. Delicious muscle twinges, reminding me of the previous night's bedroom athletics accompanied me on my walk, both relaxing and pleasant. I followed the path Ephraim had shown me, checking for animal life as I wended my way to the orchard. Not even birds stirred.

When I reached the crest of the hill, I sat to change into the waders. The frozen grass crackled beneath me. It was the only sound other than wind on the water; distance had swallowed the noise from the town.

I left my boots on the hill, with my clothing and a heat pack already activated, that way I could warm up fast when I got out. The air rippled with the waves of heat rising from it. I’d seen older chemical versions of items like it in old holodramas, and I was glad it was more powerful than a little bag to hold in your hands. I was glad of the waders, risking my good broken-in footwear was out of the question. Once off the hill, the water came above my knees, cold and filthy. I didn’t have long before I’d need to warm up.

I let my mind drift through the eddies of the lake, searching for life. Fish were sneaky creatures, and though I thought the water too foul to support them, I wasn’t willing to risk a catfish attack.
