“Nope, can’t do it…”

“Lucius?” I questioned as he started walking away.

“I’m locking all the doors and setting the alarm.” I laughed at this as he stormed off and after twirling a piece of my hair in what I liked to think was a seductive way, I said,

“Hurry back, handsome.” However, in the end, no amount of Vamp speed would do him any good, as by the time he came back, my drunken self was fast asleep, curled up under his jacket…

Snoring.

WORKING GIRL

Three Months Later…

I twistedand turned but still my body continued to sink into the desert sands that were trying to consume me. I knew what was coming. Or should I say, I knewwhowas coming.Because it was every time now. Every time he would only add to the nightmares. Which meant that as soon as I was up to my waist, I would hear his approach before his footsteps turned into armoured feet that came into view. I would look up and the sun behind him would blind me, until he lowered into a crouch. Then only once he was leaning an armour coated arm casually against his thigh would it block out the sun’s blinding rays.

“You can’t escape me, little queen,” he said, making me grit my teeth every time he called me that. But then I would start grinding them together furiously before I felt him grab the lower part of my face, forcefully lifting it up to him. His metal plated hands digging painfully into my cheeks, making my jaw ache and my teeth cut into the inside of my mouth until I tasted blood.

“You carry my curse, which means you carry a piece of me in here,” he said, poking at my forehead painfully and with enough force that I still felt his touch long after he had finished.

“I will release them!” I snapped, tearing my face from his hold, despite the added pain it took to do this. Just like I always did as it was like I couldn’t help myself, despite knowing it was pointless. Despite knowing that it would only make him grin, with satisfaction at seeing me fight back only making this more thrilling for him.

“And how will you do that, when the door to this realm is lost?” he taunted, making me flinch back from what I knew would be a bruising hold should I let him grab me again, just like he always tried to do a second time. But the bitterness of his words burned in my throat like bile. Because he was right, I had worked tirelessly for months and not even a single clue or a single hint was to be found.

“That’s what I thought, woman!” he snarled before standing and signalling the next part of my horror to begin, making me suddenly shout,

“Wait! Just tell me what you want!” Of course, I had tried everything at this point, but the outcome had never changed. I had tried crying out, calling him names, trying to bargain with him, to even the worse one yet…begging him for mercy. But every time he simply told me,

“But I want you to suffer. For now, my curse is your curse and that, my dear…will last an eternity,”he said before turning his back on me and walking away into the raging sandstorm that surrounded us.

“No! No! Come back here, you asshole!” I screamed as I felt the ground start to rise once more. This now doing so with his commanding actions as he raised up his hands, like he was still the Wraith Master who controlled these lands of the dead.

“NO!” I screamed, but it was no use as hundreds of bodies started to push their way up through the sand, now caving in around me as I sank deeper and deeper into the dead. Until finally, it became too much, and darkness overtook me as my face was covered over with only my hand reaching up through the death. Reaching up as if someone could still be out there with enough power to break through and save me.

But no one ever did.

“Amelia! Wake up!” I heard shouting but it always came after I had died in my dream. After I had been consumed. It was as if I never made a sound until then. In fact, Lucius had confirmed that it was only ever when I started thrashing in bed that he knew I was having a nightmare. Thankfully, these didn’t happen every night but unfortunately, they were definitely becoming more frequent.

I woke with a start, my heart pounding in my chest, and once again, I found my hand outstretched, reaching for a saviour. Then I watched as long, thick fingers intertwined with my own, just like they always did before the comforting voice of his was heard whispering in my ear.

“Ssshh, you’re alright now… it was just another dream, sweetheart,”he cooed, making me release a heavy weighted sigh, before whispering back,

“Yeah, just another dream.”But this was all I managed to say, as the tightness in my chest wouldn’t let me say more. Of course, as usual Lucius has more to say about it than I did,

“They are getting more frequent now, it’s almost every night.”

“I know,” I agreed, my tone dejected by the fact.

“Was it the same one?” he asked, as it was only the day after the grand reopening of Transfusion that I admitted to him about my dreams. This was because after he had carried me to bed when finding me passed out under his jacket, a little time later I had woken up screaming.

Which also meant that from that point on, every time I had one, Lucius would ask me about it, until eventually I didn’t even need to describe them anymore. Not now, they were all the same. Of course, it didn’t take a PhD in psychology to know what they meant. Not considering I was still tied to the Wraiths.

No, now it had just become a constant reminder of the duty my soul was bound to. We both knew it, but neither one of us had yet had the courage to speak it. Lucius was still under the hope and understanding that at some point, my dreams would calm down. However, evidence was suggesting otherwise, and with the frequency of them, it meant that we both knew that his hope was running thin.

“We will get through this, Amelia,” Lucius said, taking me in his arms and holding me tight, just like he always did. I released another sigh before rolling over so that I could face him, now running my fingers down the days’ old stubble and making him chuckle when I scratched my nails against the scruff on his jawline.

“Is that a not-so-subtle hint for me to shave, Pet?” I smirked playfully before reminding him,
