“You gave my daughter a museum for Christmas, Luc, trust me, I already know you’re going soft, but that is what us Kings do… we finally find our hearts and our humanity.” He lifted his glass and made me raise my own, toasting the sentiment.

At this, Dom motioned for me to take a seat opposite his desk before taking his own behind it.

“But this also means I have no need to ask how married life is going, for I know all too well the affliction we Kings suffer willingly when meeting our Chosen Ones.” I nodded to the decorated trees in his office and said,

“Indeed.” To which he smirked and muttered,

“Still the same cocky bastard.”At this, I raise my glass to him and took a sip in silent acknowledgement to that statement.

“But I sense you did not want to speak with me tonight to tell me how good life is.” My reply to this was a sigh, before words followed.

“She’s been having nightmares.” He frowned before questioning,

“Oh?”

“She dreams of the Wraiths, Dom,” I added, and when hearing this, Dom set his glass down slowly.

“From what you’ve told me about her connection with them, and after seeing it for myself when they aided us in battle at her will, then I can’t say I’m surprised.”

“I don’t like it,” I admitted feeling my body tense, as her dreams had been getting worse.

“I can quite honestly say, Luc, that I know exactly what you’re going through.” I raised a brow in question, making him continue,

“Keira’s mind has always been so in tune with the future. The weight of the prophecy set against her shoulders was a constant reminder and this manifested in her dreams.”

“Yes, but Amelia has fulfilled hers, so why does she still dream?” I asked, already knowing that Amelia had suffered from nightmares before, but it had never been like this…not nearly every night.

“Has she though?” he asked, making my frown deepen.

“What, you believe there is more? More for us to fucking endure?” I asked, the disbelief dripping from every word.

“As her father, my answer wants to instantly say, fuck no… like you said, she has endured-enough already. You both have. But as a King in our world, who knows…? But I do know this… only too often have I had to learn of the many paths the Fates do weave, and each one a bitter sting to endure. So, I give you this piece of advice and tell you this as a friend, prepare yourself for anything.”

“I had a feeling you were going to say that,” I said wryly, making him sigh back in his chair and retake his glass.

“I wish I had better news or better advice,” Dom said, making me drink back the amber liquid that really needed to be savoured.

“Tell me, in these dreams, is she frightened?” he asked, making me look down at the glass and swirl the liquid, releasing more of its mouth-watering scent.

“She tells me no, but I don’t know for sure… although, if anything, she seems more frustrated,” I told him.

“Frustrated?”

“She made a vow to all those trapped, lost souls, and it is one that she fears she will never fulfil. The weight of an entire nation is set up on her shoulders and, well, as Kings of our own kingdoms, we know how that feels.” Dominic nodded, there were very few of us that would understand the true meaning of the weight of the world upon your shoulders as being more than just a throw away comment.

“She is young, Lucius, but what makes up for her lack of age is her ability to see beyond past mistakes. When the time is right, she will know what to do.” Before I could say anything, he took my look for what it was, and said,

“And yes, I am quite well aware that my tune has changed. But then, after seeing what my daughter became on the battlefield, what she achieved, her strength and courage, her intelligence… Gods, but I will be the first to admit that I foolishly underestimated it.”

“I can’t argue with that,” I said, helping myself to another refill and topping up his own glass while I was at it.

“Yes, well, hence the reason for my second piece of advice, one that is simple enough, for I only advise that you do not do the same… trust her, Lucius, trust in her abilities to do what is right for the future. For if there is a prophecy she is tied to, then it is a fight out of our hands. For if the Fates have taught me anything, it is that sometimes we fight in the shadows of our fear, instead of looking to the light and seeing that there lies the truth.”

“And what truth is that, old friend?”

“That our Queens are fearless in the face of fighting for what is right. They are pure of hearts, and pure of souls, despite what blood runs through their veins. They are the light and like you once told me, old friend…”

“We arebut the moths attracted to their…”
