We would need to be careful.

“There looks to be a level up there for sleeping in, why don't we take it in shifts,” my mum nodded and pushed me toward the ladder.

“You go first, sweetheart.” I nodded as it had been a long walk to find this house and I had to admit now I was mortal again, I was feeling the exhaustion a lot quicker than I had gotten used too. Being stripped of that side of me felt far too familiar. But then again, I had only had months to adapt to my new power. Which was why when I looked to my mother to see her shoulders sag again, I realized that for her it had been nearly thirty years since she had experienced being mortal. It was why I first nodded to Sophia and then jerked my head toward my mum, trying to silently get this across to her without making it obvious. Thankfully my aunt took the hint, now coming over to my mother and putting her arms around her shoulders. She then started to lead her to the ladder, telling her,

“Pip and I have got this, go lie with your daughter. We will be fine.” My mum agreed silently with a nod of her head as she was looking more exhausted by the minute. I pulled myself up first to the sleeping platform and started to unbundle my dress that I had purposely kept under the cloak out of the rain. As for my cloak, we had all taken these off so they might have chance to dry in front of the fire.

I took out my glasses ready for when I woke up and set the thin black frames aside. Then when I was ready to lie down and cover myself with my dress, I looked down at my mum to find her already fast asleep, curled on her side. So, I used my dress and covered us both, thankful for its thick material and long skirt. I then put my arm around my mum and cuddled in close, knowing it would help keep her warm. The only evidence that she wasn’t passed out cold was I felt her squeeze my hand, making me smile in the dark.

The next time I opened my eyes I had no idea how much time had passed, only that I felt sluggish. It was as if a sound had stirred me from my sleep and I was being forced to wake. That was when I realized that I no longer had my mum's hand in mine.

“Mum?” I spoke to the darkness, before raising my head, looking to see if she had moved from the platform.

“Ssshh,”I heard her hushed whisper before finding her shadow by the ladder. I reached for my glasses as I sat up, then I asked her,

“What is it?”Her answer came just as I was scooting off the musty mound of bedding and shifting closer to her.

“Pip and Sophia heard horses approach, they've gone to check it out.” I frowned thinking this was a bad sign. It was even worse when my mother started to slip her legs over the edge, making me grab for her arm.

“Shouldn't we stay up here, hidden?”

“It will be fine… I'm just going to see if I can see them through the window.” I opened my mouth to argue, but she quickly cut me off with a reassuring smile.

“But, Mum…”

“It will be fine, Fae. Stay here,” she said before climbing down the ladder and going out of sight. But, in the end I lasted for only a minute before I couldn't stand it any longer. So, I followed her down and I found her looking out the window. But then when she heard me approach with the floorboards creaking beneath my feet, she moved away from the window and came toward me.

“I told you to stay up there.”

“I know but… Mum, look out!” I shouted the second I saw a figure emerged from the shadows and grab her from behind. Then just as I was about to react, pain erupted from behind me, as somebody had knocked me on the side of my head. I fell to the floor instantly, hearing my mother's scream.

“Should we take this one too?” a man's voice asked who was now standing over me.

As I started to flitter out of consciousness the last thing I heard was,

“No, we will be quicker with one… besides…”

“He only wants the blonde.”

“Amelia!” The sound of my aunt Sophia shouting my name roused me from my own unconsciousness before I felt them trying to pick me off the floor.

“What… what happened?” I asked, trying to scramble for answers, yet something in the back of my mind was screaming at me, before I suddenly shouted,

“Mum!” That's when it came flooding back to me as I bolted up from the chair they had put me in, only to stagger into my aunt Sophia’s arms.

“Whoa… easy now… we found you unconscious on the floor, where's Keira, where's your mum, Fae?” Sophia asked, looking more concerned by the minute.

“I woke up… there… there was a noise, one minute she was looking out the window and the next…” I groaned, as the pain in my head intensified,

“Take your time, Sweetheart,” Pip said, leading me back to the chair and making me sit again before I fell down. That's when I felt the side of my face was wet and I reached up, feeling the cut I had there making me hiss in pain as it stung.

“There was a man… one behind my mum who grabbed her but before I could stop him, I felt pain… another guy must have been hiding and struck me from behind. Did they…?” Oh God, I couldn't bring myself to say it,

“We couldn't find her, so they must have taken her with them,” Sophia informed me, which was when my memories started to slot further into place.
