I knew that my father was making a point by doing this, letting everyone in the room know exactly who my mother was to him. Which was why he used his sister to do so, in a calculated act of possessiveness. As was usual with my mother, she blushed easily and started to bite her bottom lip as the embarrassment was getting to her. My father watched this with heated eyes before leaning over and whispering something in her ear, making her blush even more.

“I must impose upon you, Sophia, to stay… yes, stay and become my betrothed’s companion, for strangely she knows no one here,” he said in a way as he didn’t believe her story on how she came to be. And well, my mother wasn’t known for her acting skills any more than she was known for being a good liar. Something I had a feeling my father was getting a taste of and no doubt calling her on her bluff often.

“No one?” Sophia asked, clearly knowing this would have been strange if she hadn’t.

“Yes, my little beauty here, came to be in my possession by strange means indeed, but that conversation is for another time, I dare say.” My father said making my mother look as if she wanted to shrink down into her seat and let it swallow her whole.

“Very well, let us speak no more about it, for it is a joyous occasion and one needed not celebrated with jolts of the past.” The way Sophia said this I could tell she was trying to let my mother know in a subtle way, that she was the Sophia my mother knew. And thankfully, it worked. I could tell this by the way my mother released a relieved sigh. Although unfortunately it was also one my father hadn't missed. Not when he now raised a questioning brow down at her, before frowning back at Sophia.

Sophia knowing that she might have gone too far, simply curtseyed to them one more time, before speaking,

“If you'll excuse me, the journey was arduous, and I would like to freshen up before the festivities are to fully begin.” My father bowed his head, clearly relieving Sophia of her being there. As for my mother, she took another drink from a servant who held a tray next to her, and started drinking down the wine quickly, no doubt needing it. However, she also looked like she was about to choke on it when my father leaned forward and whispered (Gods but I do not wish to ever know) in her ear before placing possessive hand on her leg.

I knew then that Sophia had not been exaggerating, as trying to get my mother free of my father's clutches was going to be more complicated than I had allowed myself to believe.

However, it seemed that complicated was most definitely in the cards for us all, as my tray was empty and I had no choice but to go back into the kitchen.

And it was a complication that arose on my way there, as I caught sight of something that made me stop dead.

Because now I knew that my father wasn’t the only King here.

However, unlike my father who was currently kissing his Chosen One, this particular King was kissing somebody else.

And was why in the end, my pained little cry came out by speaking his name in utter shock…

“Lucius.”
