“Hey, ease up, Little Bird. I know we forced you to get the tattoo, but how big of a surprise is it, really? We’ve been warning you. And this? It’s not going to be the worst thing that happens, so chill out, and stop being rude.” I look up from where I’m cleaning and smile at Gray.

“I think it was stupid of you to put initials on it, but it will be nice evidence for the police. I guess I should thank you for that.”

“You’re never going to the police. Even if you get away from us, your father and fiancé will never let that happen.” She looks so smug, and I feel like knocking the wind out of her sails.

“No one in your family or social circle has called the police. They really aren’t trying that hard to find you.”

“Hayes.” Wade’s tone is full of warning, but I hold my hand up to stop him.

“No. I think our Rory here needs to be given some more information. Yes, we put you in this situation, we’re keeping you here, but no one is trying to rescue you. Your family is upset, of course, but your life isn’t worth the trouble dear old daddy could get into if the police start snooping around. So, again, even if you get away from us, there’s no way you’ll ever be telling your story to anyone that could do anything to us. Get over it.”

“You’re lying.” Her eyes are glassy, and her lip trembles, but Rory stands tall.

I close the distance between us and cup her cheek in my hand. “I have no reason to lie. I’m just telling you what you should already know. You’re ours to do with as we see fit. Maybe you should be nicer because it seems like we’re the only ones that might actually give a fuck about you.” I release her face, pick up my supplies, and leave.

I can hear the guys talking to Rory as I walk out, but I don’t give a fuck about what they might be saying to make her feel better. I had plans to eat Rory out on my table, then fuck her until she couldn’t speak anymore, but now I just want to hurt her. It’s better that I walked away. Maybe I should call Mal. Adler and I texted her with updates about delivering Rory’s engagement ring, but her and I haven’t had one of our chats in forever.

I head into my room and lock the door. After I get my table and equipment put away, I change into sweats and plop onto the chaise lounge I have in my room. I dial Mal’s number from memory, and she answers after two rings.

“Hayes? Is everything okay?”

“Hey, Mal. Yeah, everything is fine. I just have some free time and figured I’d call and talk to you more. We haven’t had much time to do that lately.”

“I know, dear. We’ve just been consumed with plans, and I don’t want to be a

distraction.”

“You’re never a distraction, Mal. Is Eddie taking care of you?” With this plan we’re carrying out, we haven’t seen Eddie in a while, and it’s weird because normally we spend quite a bit of time together.

“You know he is. We miss you all. I know I said I’d come and see you all sometime next week, but what if Eddie and I come for a visit in a day or two? It would be nice to share a meal with my family all around me again.”

“That would be great. We’ll make all your favorites.”

“That sounds wonderful. I must admit that I’m rather excited to finally see Rory face-to-face. Have you told her anything yet?”

I hold back the protective urge that rises up. “We’ve given her some bare bones information. She’s still confused and out of the loop about most things.”

“Excellent. I’d like to be the one to share some of the details with her.”

“We kind of figured that you’d want to be included in some way. You can share whatever

you’d like, and we’ll fill in the rest, if it’s necessary.”

“I can’t wait. I’ll tell Eddie to start making the arrangements for us. Are you sure there isn’t something wrong? You don’t sound like yourself.”

“Nothing is wrong. It’s just been a long day, and I needed some time away from everyone else.”

“Alexander was the same way. He could be the life of the party, but when he needed to recharge, he’d lock himself in the library or his office for hours. You remind me so much of him.

Your father would be so proud of you, Hayes. I know I am.”

“Thank you, Mal. I hope so. I’m going to let you go. Get some rest, and I’ll see you in a couple of days. I love you.”

“I love you too, son. See you soon.”

For better or worse, Rory will have the answers she wants soon. I just don’t know what it’ll mean for the rest of us yet.
